Volunteer Opportunity

If you’re willing to host a weekly social Zoom lunch time for your child’s grade, please email cheri.spies@ridgeline.org I am looking for a 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade parent to each host a grade level lunchtime Zoom once per week.

Research

In the classroom, research is an ongoing activity. It is also a choice during Distance Learning. If your student wishes to research a particular topic and share the information with classmates, please let me know. Questions? Just send an email!

Valentines Exchange

Our classroom Valentine’s Day celebrations are some of my favorite days of the year. This year we are hosting an optional Valentine exchange with the help of room parents Kari Stubbert and Emily Caldera. Here’s how it will work:

  • Make or buy 31 valentines (this number includes students, Cheri and Azusa). Have your child write their own name on each card. DO NOT address the valentines.

  • Drop them off on the Ridgeline front steps on Friday, February 5 or Monday, February 8.

  • We will separate them into a bag for each child and let them “quarantine” for a few days.

  • You may pick up a bag of valentines on Friday, February 12.

  • Valentines can include stickers, pencils, tattoos, etc., but no candy please.

Talent Show Act Submission Saturday

Dust off your child’s baton, tap shoes, or ballet slippers. Clear the living room for your child’s tumbling routine, and record their 3-minute act for next week’s show! Submissions are light so far, and the deadline is fast approaching. Help make this a successful event showcasing the amazing varied talents of Ridgeline students. This year’s virtual talent show is a golden opportunity to showcase acts that cannot fit on the Ridgeline stage. Think outside the Talent Show box (tuba player in a treehouse, anyone?) Send your videos to Kate Downing by wobblykate@hotmail.com --Please send in video submissions by Saturday, January 23rd. In the email, please include your child's name, class, and grade level, as well as any information you would like included about their act.

Weekly Art Update from Melanie & Pete

This week (1/19-22), we continued practicing our portrait drawing skills by finishing up self-portraits, and also drawing Martin Luther King, Jr. Next week (1/25-28), we'll start on a landscape unit. We'll look at the painting “Landscape With Rainbow” by Robert Duncanson. This hopeful painting was chosen by Jill Biden for display during the inauguration and (I learned) this artist was one of the best-known and most acclaimed African American painters of the Civil War era.

Don’t Miss out! Sibling Enrollment 2021-22 School Year

Siblings of students who are currently enrolled and will remain enrolled in Ridgeline in the coming year receive enrollment priority so long as an application for the sibling is received prior to the application deadline. If space is unavailable, students with sibling-level priority will be the first group selected by an equitable lottery process for placement on the waiting list. In order to qualify for sibling preference, you must complete the online enrollment application for any incoming sibling by January 31.

I was reflecting on how our lives have changed since the Covid outbreak. I am completely in

awe of the efforts of our families, students and Ridgeline staff. We are all making the best of a

very challenging situation and I appreciate your efforts.

Dear Room 5 families,

Hello from the art department! This is the first of weekly updates to let you know what

your amazing artists are working on. This week (1/11-15) we're learning how to use facial

proportion guidelines to draw a self-portrait. Next week (1/19-22) we'll honor Dr. Martin Luther

King, Jr. by drawing his portrait. We'll look at the portrait of President Obama by artist

Kehinde Wiley for inspiration.

Also, we've changed the weekly schedule a bit, so thank you all for your patience &

understanding with this! Your student will now have Zoom Class on Fridays with the whole

class. On Wednesdays, they can start working on the lesson posted in Seesaw. They should

bring any work (finished or in-progress) & their art materials to the zoom class on Fridays.

Your students are doing extraordinary things during extraordinary times, and I love working

with them. They make my day : )

A message from our PE teacher Jeannelle Mahle

Hello everyone,

My name is Jeannelle and I am the new PE teacher. I am so excited to be part

of Ridgeline. I will be sending out weekly emails to update you on what we will

be doing in PE for each class.


ALL GRADES - On the first day of PE classes, we will take it nice and slow by

doing a getting to know you activity. Students will pick one topic (topics will be

provided on a google slide) to share with everyone. We will have casual

conversations and learn about each other on our first day.

Cheri’s Class Update 12-10-20

Dear Families,

Welcome to week 11 of Distance Learning. We are in the home stretch before Winter Break, December 21 thru January 4. We look forward to the positive changes 2021 will bring!

Amaryllis Bulb Tradition: Every year we plant an Amaryllis Bulb and students record observations as they watch it change. This activity coincides with botany (parts of a bulb) and math studies (measurement + data). We continue the annual Amaryllis bulb planting tradition, with a few tweaks. This year’s bulb was planted while students watched during Morning Meeting and we’ll check for changes every couple days. In past years, during in-person learning in our classroom, students measure the growth of the bulb at least twice weekly. They use both inch and centimeter units. We They also ask them to draw/color pictures to record changes. You may want to plant a bulb of your own to observe at home!

Polar Writing and Research Project: Students are working hard to finish this activity. We would really like students to share their learning with others either by presenting to the group live or by recording their presentation and posting it to our Class Seesaw Blog. One goal of research work in our classroom is to teach others. Let us know if you have questions.

Cheri's Update 12-4-2020

Dear Ridgeline Families

What a week it’s been! The Lower Elementary classes are in the middle of a special writing assignment involving research of polar animals. This is a two-week project designed to take students through a structured research experience. The process allows students to apply their developing writing skills to a project that is meaningful and educational. Thank you for all the support you are providing your student at home!

This past week students chose an animal, created a planner with four topics (4-square planner) and added interesting details to the planner. Some students got started writing topic sentences for their four paragraphs. Next week students will complete their writing, and practice sharing their information with others. Older students will complete a revision and editing process culminating with their research typed up in google docs.

Get ready for some practice presentations! We will discuss speaking clearly, making eye contact, and using our voices to reflect punctuation and to answer questions.

Future - project finale: Students will eventually use the knowledge gained to create displays with a drawing and a title. Poster board or cardboard from an old box works great. Stay tuned for more on this step later.

Dear Families,

Welcome to week 11 of Distance Learning

We hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing 4-day weekend!

For the next two weeks our students will learn about animals of the Polar Regions. After exploring the geography and climate of the Arctic and Antarctica, we’ll discuss adaptations-both behavioral and biological. Students will choose an animal to research then be guided through the process with a focus on writing.

Scholastic News: Please help your student remember to join their weekly Scholastic lesson. Grade 1- Wednesday at 9:15 w/Azusa, Grade 2- Thursday at 9:15 w/Azusa, Grade 3- Friday at 12:30 w/Cheri

Beginning this week, most students will be assigned daily spelling activities. On Friday they can ask an adult to give them a spelling test.

Cheri's Update 11-16-2020

Dear Families,

This week we’ll continue to learn about Native Americans. Our hope is that students will gain some understanding about the ways in which indigenous people lived and the practices developed to satisfy their physical and spiritual needs. We want children to feel respect for their own and other cultures and to honor belief systems different from their own.

Some Seesaw activities are assigned for practice following live instruction. Other activities are assigned for review or special interest. Activities that students should be sure to complete will be marked with asterisks/stars around the ***title***. Research projects or other non-screen school work can substitute for unmarked activities.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade Scholastic News schedule is included. During our Scholastics lessons with students, we introduce new topics presented, review articles and take a peek at the grade-level activities provided. Azusa meets with 1st grade students on Wednesdays at 9:15 and 2nd grade students on Thursdays at 9:15. Cheri meets with 3rd graders on Fridays at 12:30. Please add these meetings to your student’s’ schedules.

Cheri's Update 11-2-2020

Dear Families,

Welcome to Home Learning Week Seven, November 2-6.

We are grateful for the opportunity to meet with you last week during Family Conferences. Your words of encouragement and your commitment to your children’s education energized us!

This week we begin with the next step in our Cultural/Science studies-Decomposers! Fallen leaves and Halloween pumpkins decompose or rot over time. We’ll look closely at the stars of this process- decomposers! After watching a video about decomposition in forests our students will go on a Decomposer Hunt then have fun experimenting with different types of foods, how they decompose and what conditions or products might slow their decomposition!

Weekly Teacher-Student Meetings/Check-ins

I meet with students individually every week. This one-on-one time provides an opportunity for me to check-in, evaluate social/emotional well-being and assess academic progress. It also allows time for some individualized instruction. Parents are always welcome to attend. Because the 10-15 minute meetings are individual, your student may have to wait a few minutes. Please leave the zoom window open and I will invite your student to join. I especially appreciate knowing about changes or events that affect your family so Azusa and I can observe and provide additional support for students as needed. The schedule for our weekly teacher-student check-in is included. These meetings happen at the same time each week. Please help your child remember to come to Cheri’s zoom-room on time.

Cheri's Update 10-22-2020

Dear Families,

Welcome to Home Learning Week Six, October 26-30. Only 3 days of school this week, with family conferences on Thursday and Friday.

On Wednesday morning we’ll do some pumpkin math. If you are able to join us with a pumpkin of your own that would be great! If that’s not convenient, your student can watch as the teacher weighs and measures her pumpkin. Materials needed: pumpkin, scale, yarn or string to measure the circumference of the pumpkin, scissors to cut off extra and a tape measure or ruler to measure the string!

Over the next couple weeks, students will research plants that grows in a temperate forest biome. I’ve attached a planner with which to gather information. We ask that students provide an picture (photo or hand drawn) and at least 3 facts about their chose plant.

Conferences - Parent/student and teacher conferences are coming up Thursday, October 29, and Friday, October 30. These are no school days. With comprehensive distance learning, we recognize that some families are in frequent contact with teachers. If you do not feel that you need to touch base with your child’s teacher at this time, it is not mandatory to sign up. However, if your child’s teacher specifically requests to meet with you, please be sure to sign up.

I meet with students individually every week. This helps me get a sense of their social/emotional well-being and their academic progress. It also allows time for some individualized instruction. Parents are always welcome to attend.

SUPPLY DISTRIBUTION

Art Supply & Other Supplies Distribution - Now that we are a month into school we have more items for you to pick up to assist you student(s) with CDL. There are items for ALL students to pick up. Pick up times are on conference days - Thursday, October 29, 11 a.m. -1 p.m. AND Friday, October 30, 8:30 a.m. - 10am. Please make every effort to come during those times to pick up art supplies and other items. If you cannot come at these times we encourage you to reach out to another Ridgeline family to pick up your child’s items. Please present a clearly written sign with each student’s FULL NAME, GRADE, and CLASS on it. Add siblings to your sign with all the same information. Example: Patty Smith Simon Smith

Plant research idea/planners

Cheri's Update 10-16-2020

Dear Families,

Welcome to Home Learning Week Four, October 12-16. This week and next we will have fun learning about Botany and Math using Leaves and Pumpkins! Our first in depth Biome studies will be with our own, familiar, Temperate Forest Biome. We’ll learn about types of leaves and investigate why they change color. We will also use leaf collections to practice graphing. This weekend please help your child notice and collect a variety of leaves so that they have some hands-on materials for next week. While you’re outside, talk about the types of trees that live in and around Eugene. Take time to make a list of some of the trees and plants you see. We will be learning about many types of plants that live in a Temperate Forest, including nonvascular plants such as moss, lichen and algae. Many plants that live in this biome have adapted to live close or even in water. Some Aquatic plants you may be familiar with are Cattails and water lilies. Enjoy exploring our surroundings!

During the week of October 26, we'll do some pumpkin math. We will weigh, measure, estimate, graph, and count our pumpkins. Please plan on having an uncarved "math pumpkin" available. Small to medium-sized pumpkins will be fine for this activity….but larger ones can be fun too.

Join the testing Zoom link Azusa's Zoom Meeting Please have video on. Ridgeline staff will guide your child through instructions.

Open your browser (Chrome, Safari, etc.). Your Zoom view be covered, but that’s okay, as long as Ridgeline staff can see your child .

4. Go to this website: 4j-or.easycbm.com

5. Your screen should look like this:

6. Click on the Students “Click Here” link.

7. Type in the teacher’s username. It is azusa.mcmullen

8. Once you click “Go!” then you should be taken to a screen that asks you to select the group. Click on “All Students”.

9. Scroll through the names until you come to your child’s name, and click on it.

10. ***Confirm it is on your child’s test, and not another student’s!

11. You will be prompted to enter a password, which is the six-digit number of your child’s birthdate. MMDDYY, with no slashes.

12. Once entered, you will see “Select the Test”.

13. Scroll through the array of tests offered and select the one your teacher/assistant has indicated.

14. If your child is doing the math test, your assistance in reading the math problems aloud to your child may be needed. No reading assistance is allowed on the reading assessments.

15. Your child’s Ridgeline teacher or assistant is required to observe your child taking the assessment. There will likely be one group at a time on Zoom, testing at the same time.

16. These groups will happen in Azusa’s zoom-room and will be available the morning and afternoon time slots. There will be an assignment in Seesaw with more instructions and times next week. Thanks for your help with these required tests.

Cheri's Update 10-8-2020

Dear Families,

Greetings! After three weeks our zoom meetings are beginning to feel normal and students are becoming more interactive with us and one another. I guess it just takes getting used to. Thank you for all your support.

Biome Exploration

Let’s get ready to travel the world as we explore all the beautiful biomes of our Earth - deserts, rainforests, polar regions, grasslands, mountains, wetlands, and even the ocean. We’ll learn what a biome is and identify its living and nonliving parts. During our writing lessons, students will choose an animal to research and write about.

Live Lessons… The Instruction Manual for Remote Learning

Our seesaw activities are designed to be follow ups to our daily live lessons. Being with students live allows us to introduce new concepts, clarify expectations and answer questions. If your child misses a lesson, they may struggle to complete the Seesaw activity on their own. Pending permissions (more on that later), we will have recorded lessons available. Until then, encourage good attendance! If your child misses a lesson and needs some help, please have them visit Azusa’s help zoom to get back on track.

Our lessons are highly interactive, and we often have students in view on screen. This means that the recorded lessons include students in the video. In order to share these recorded lessons with students who need them, we need your consent. Please fill out this form ASAP so that our recorded lessons can be made available.

Next week we will be starting our first round of EasyCBM Testing with one minute reading tests. Students will be tested during their conference time and tests should only take a couple of minutes. We ask that your child be in a quiet space where they can focus without distractions. This is an assessment, which means the students will need to complete the task without help or coaching. Our students have all done this before and it should feel familiar to them.

Cheri's Update 9-25-2020

Dear Families,

Welcome to Home Learning week of 9/21-25. Thank you for everything you are doing to help your students

complete home learning activities. Since ours is a multi-grade classroom and students function at different levels, some of our zoom lessons are grade level specific. Please refer to this week’s attached schedule. I color-coded the grade specific zoom meetings to make it easier.

To find assigned activities, students should check their Seesaw account. Since we will keep our Zoom meeting open all day, every day- all meetings will have the same Zoom link. To re-enter our Zoom meeting click on the original link.

· Art classes will start next week, Sept. 28-Oct. 2. You will receive more information from our Art teachers on Monday, 9/28.

How parents can help their student prepare:

· Be sure your child can easily find our Zoom meeting link. Help establish routines and workspace. Set alarms (on your phone, a timer, a clock, or on their device) to make sure they know when their scheduled meetings begin. There’s a Chrome app called Reminders that lets you set a sequence of timed notifications on a chrome book.

· Be sure your child knows how to photograph work using the available devices. You may want to add the Seesaw Class app to your phone so that your child can have another way to submit photographs easily.

FYI: 1. The box means there are materials in your student’s box from Ridgeline to accompany this lesson.

2. Sharing: Your student may bring an item to morning meeting that others can learn from. Help your student prepare to tell three facts about their sharing and answer questions from peers.

3. Your student will find the day’s activity assignments in Seesaw plus messages that remind them it’s time to go to a zoom meeting.
