Volunteer Hours - We are halfway through the school year folks. A huge thank you to everyone who is giving countless hours to Ridgeline! Every day we see volunteers coming in to help in classrooms, make materials, volunteering in the library, cleaning the kitchenette, going on field trips, sitting on committees, etc. Please remember to log ALL your hours. If you have not created a Track it Forward account, please do so and record your hours. If you have questions contact Cynthia.

Library Room Volunteers - Library volunteers play an important role in supporting our students and their learning! Classrooms call daily, especially during the morning work period, to see if we have a library volunteer as students want to use that space. We desperately need volunteers Tuesday, Wednesday, Fridays, and later Monday morning. Contact Cynthia to volunteer.

STILL Needed! Branch Volunteer Help Needed - Dan Trent, our PE specialist and facilities coordinator, is looking for volunteers to help him cut up and haul away branches from the school grounds. Please contact Dan to arrange a time to help.

Elizabeth Voth - Elizabeth Voth will be Room 8's new long-term substitute teacher! She will be here, working behind the scenes, starting on January 28 and will fully take over the classroom on February 4th. Here is her bio!

You can find Elizabeth anywhere there is a learning opportunity! From childhood experiences exploring forest ecology outside her hometown of Newberg, Oregon with her sister, two brothers, good friends and a Border Collie, to spending high school summers in Alaska tending organic gardens during the day and carving ancient ivory most evenings. Community-building practices of wood-fired ceramics defined Elizabeth’s bachelor’s degree at George Fox University, expanded by cultural and history studies abroad at Oxford and eleven other countries through shipboard travel with the University of Virginia. A winter season teaching in Alaska was such a good experience that Elizabeth went on to earn a master’s in education from the Washington Montessori Institute at Loyola University in Maryland followed by the AMI Orientation to Adolescent Studies in 2011. She has deeply enjoyed opportunities in Wisconsin and California to facilitate elementary students in their love of discovery both as individuals and within their dynamic learning community.

Pasta Dinner - Ridgeline’s annual Pasta Dinner is coming up on Friday, February 22nd, 5-7 p.m. Enjoy a home cooked pasta dinner with red sauce or pesto, bread with garlic butter, and green salad. Visit with other Ridgeline families and bring your Direct Donation Drive (DDD) donation. The Pasta Dinner is the kick-off for the month long DDD, Ridgeline’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Shoe Drive Fundraiser - Thank you for all of your help getting the word out!  We're at 40 bags (large trash bag size) of shoes, and on a great pace to hit our goal of 100 bags!  The best way to hit our goal is to keep talking about it! Ideas for this week include:

1) Keep talking about it!  We now have collection boxes at Full Circle Fitness, UO Bookstore, UO Rec Center, Nike Running, Eugene Running Co, Oakway Fitness, Windermere Real Estate (Oak Street and Delta Hwy) and RunHub.   If you work or spend time near any of these locations please keep talking about the shoes drive.

2) Ask at an office - even if you don't work there and just know someone who does!

3) If you haven't done so already, try to collect 25 pairs of shoes in the next week!  Ask 25 friends to donate one pair each, ask 5 friends to donate 5... Or post on Facebook that you're hoping to collect 25 pairs in the coming week.

4) If you can't find the email with the information we sent in early January, here it is again.

Questions: Ask Ann Carney Nelson or Nancy Willcox-Trent!

COMMUNITY NEWS -

The U of O Math Departments invites all students in grades K-8, who like math and share a passion for games, problem solving, and hands-on math activities, to come to the Second Eugene Youth Math Festival at 10 am - 1 pm  on Saturday, February 23, in McArthur Court. With the generous support from NSF we are able to offer free admission without prior registration.

Please note, parents are required to accompany our youngest participants (grades K- 3). All other parents are encouraged to stay.

All parents should be ready to pick up their children when they are done with the activities. We are unable to watch the children

outside of the math stations.

If you have any questions, please contact Maria Nemirovskaya at nemirovm@uoregon.edu

We will be offering a FREE event for the community at Hilyard Community Center on March 16th: Absolutely Incredible Kid Day® (AIKD) is a national holiday every March that lifts up the kids in our lives. Every year, thousands of adults send notes, emails, letters, texts or videos to encourage young people across the country. Participating in AIKD is a meaningful way to let youth know how much they are appreciated. Words are powerful – young lives are changed by this day and simple act of an adult's encouragement, love, and kindness. We will be celebrating AIKD through a free, family friendly community event where we will provide tables to welcome parents with special stationary, writing tips and suggestions for types of messages. Meanwhile, the kids will be kept busy with free hip hop dance and parkour lessons throughout the day, taught by Shorme Norteye of BEISM in Santa Cruz, California. Shorme is a nationally known instructor and dancer who teaches at UC Santa Cruz. She brings an upbeat, positive vibe that encourages every child to push their limits and have fun while getting exercise and supporting one another. In addition to hip hop and parkour lessons, the youth will facilitate fun games, outdoor cooking, arts and crafts, survival skills, and other activities for a variety of interests.

We also have residential and day summer camp programs at Camp WIlani in Veneta which are welcoming to ALL youth and we provide up to 83% tuition assistance.
