Sharon's Weekly Update 10-6-17

posted Oct 6, 2017, 1:04 PM by Cynthia Friedman
Hello, Room 9 families!

We have been having a lot of discussions about PE in Room 9. For some students, it is hard to follow directions and learn to work with the group. Our lunch discussion today detailed how PE meets our personal goals for physical fitness and team building. This would be a great discussion to have with your student at home: what can you do to meet your goals during PE?

Room 9's sixth year students will be taking trips to the library every three weeks to research their Big Project. Our currently scheduled dates are 9am-11am on Oct 12Nov. 2Nov. 16, and Dec. 7. We have a driver! (thank you, Kate Walser!!) but we NEED ANOTHER CHAPERONE. Please contact me if you are able to accompany sixth graders on any of these dates.

MANY STUDENTS STILL DO NOT HAVE INSIDE SHOES. Please make sure your student has this important piece of equipment so that our classroom can stay tidy during the muddy season.

Today we took the Disney cruise ship! Students worked together and mocked hauling lines for ships. We had a short lesson today about density, in which we made a "wave-maker" using rubbing alcohol and mineral oil. Most students have finished their first draft of their first story and are peer editing other friends' work.

Please return JOG-A-THON PACKETS by Oct. 16th! The Jog-A-Thon was a fantastically fun (if wet) experience. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made it happen.

I am still missing eight work plans from last week, and many work plans are coming back to us without signatures. Please remember that the work plan is our message home to you. We want to be sure you know about your student's work and any potential homework. If your student still has not shown you last week's work plan, could you check your blue folder together and make sure it comes back to school tomorrow?

4th Grade Support Meeting:The transition to 4th grade can be a significant transition to many students at a variety of schools, magnified perhaps at Ridgeline as the student makes the leap to upper elementary.

That is why we have scheduled a q&a panel discussion with teachers, administration and recent 4th grade parents for October 10th at 6:30pm. We are hoping this panel can help normalize the transition and answer questions you may have about expectations and adjustments your 4th grader may be experiencing.

In addition, or in lieu of, we are working on identifying parent mentors to answer questions and offer collegial support. Please reach out to your room parent or teacher if you need help connecting with someone.” --Stephanie Edwards

Thank you!
