Sharon's Weekly Update 10-6-16

posted Oct 6, 2016, 1:45 PM by Cynthia Friedman

Hello, Room 9 families!

Lyndsay the new PE teacher firmly requests that STUDENTS WEAR APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We do a lot of running around, so if your student’s outdoor shoes are not appropriate for exercise, please make sure they bring an extra pair that will work for PE.

Last week, Room 9 discussed the challenges of reconstructing the past based on fossil evidence. This week, we will explore homologies, as well as the Ramapithecene and Australopithecene fossils. We are beginning an exploration of the metric system. Sixth year students are branching out on their Big Project research with practice on honing down their topics.

Finally, Breakout Biology has begun in earnest! Fourth years are exploring food chains with Mary in Room 8. Fifth year students have begun an exploration of taxonomic rank in the animal kingdom with Clint. Sixth year students are studying human biology in Room 9 with me: this week, we discussed DNA, cells and systems.

If you have any materials, books, artifacts, or activities to support our thematic research into ancient civilizations, I would love to hear from you! We are currently looking for information to support our research into the following categories of research: Transportation, Political Organization, Nutrition and Health, Kinship and Family, Communication, Clothing and Textiles, Belief Systems, Art and Cultural Expression, and Architecture and Shelter. We are looking for loanable items as well as donations for this year’s history studies.

Homework begins this week! Please help your student make time for 12 minutes of typing practice as well as 20 minutes of reading for FOUR days per week. This should be noted on the back of the work plan when it comes home for the weekend.
