Sarah's Weekly Update 12-11-14

Academics
This week in culture we’re looking at how humans have used their creativity to invent things. We had a class discussion asking what inventions could we not live without? What inventions were most important to mankind? What is the coolest thing that humans have invented? Once this got their inventive juices flowing, they picked an invention and researched some information about it.

We’re also working on writing final drafts of short stories. Next week students will be turning these final drafts into picture books. They’ll then be able to give these picture books to others as presents.

In 6th grade math, the focus is still on fractions, though some are starting to work with positive and negative numbers. In 5th grade we have some good investigations of decimal place value going. 4th grade is looking more closely at factors and divisibility rules.

Our grammar focus this week started with using 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person in narratives. Now we’re picking out the main idea of a paragraph and deciding when it’s time to start a new paragraph.

Field Trips
On Dec. 18, all the upper el classes will be taking a trip to Alton Baker Park to release our salmon into the Willamette River. We’ll be leaving school at 10:30 and returning around 12:30. Since we’ll be traveling by 4J bus we won’t need drivers, but if you’re interested in joining us as a chaperone, let me know by the end of the day on Wednesday.
