Sarah's Weekly Update 10-23-14

posted Oct 24, 2014, 10:17 AM by Cynthia Friedman
Our math program is moving along at a good pace. The 6th grade is working with factor trees to find the greatest common factor and the least common multiple. They are poised to begin working with fractions shortly as well. 5th grade is still focusing on squaring. They’ve been using that work to practice order of operations and the distributive property. 4th grade is well into working with the distributive property to help them practice their math facts.

In our Three Islands adventure, we made landfall this week. Students are making homes for themselves and are working on community buildings as well. We’ll also begin working on island economies, and we’ll have focuses of ship building, sewing, and making flour.

This week in grammar we’re looking at shortening sentences that are too long. We’re finding appropriate places to pause and end a sentence. We’re also talking a little bit about phrases that look like sentences, but aren’t.

Students are also beginning research projects this week. We’re practicing taking notes in our own words. Students are picking research topics of their choice, and as they start researching, they need to write down 10 facts that they didn’t already know.

Field Trip
Don’t forget that on Thursday we’ll be going to Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. We will need to leave school by 8:00, so please have your student at school by 7:45

Student led conferences are coming up soon. We will not be having school on Friday, November 7 or Monday, November 10 so that we will have plenty of time for conferences. Please sign up for a 20 minute slot the next time you are in the office.

On Friday, October 31, we will be having an upper el pajama day. Students are welcome to wear their favorite comfy pj’s to school. Please remember that it is school policy to leave the Halloween costumes at home for the day. Thanks!

Laughing Planet Fundraiser
Laughing Planet at 29th and Willamette will host a fundraising day for Ridgeline Montessori on Wednesday, November 5, all day, from11 am - 9 pm, giving 15% of all sales to the school.
