Jenny's Weekly Update 2-13-14

posted Feb 14, 2014, 11:01 AM by Cynthia Friedman

We are continuing to practice good writing skills using editing rules.  This week we practiced capitalizing different types of names.

Students are plugging away at their reading group books.  I have set lofty goals for each group as we have a short time frame in which to complete them. (I have checked out many from the public library and they can only be out for three weeks. This is not ideal, but it creates a good and reachable challenge for the kids.)

Students are making great progress on their plate tectonic projects.  I have seen the beginnings of game boards, comic strips and even song lyrics!  Also, students made great headway on their science fair ideas yesterday with the help from the UO S.P.I.C.E. students.  Almost all students now have their experiment questions, hypotheses and beginning steps complete.  There has been a lot of questions surrounding the science fair, so I will try to clarify here.
There are two science fairs, the Ridgeline Science Fair and the UO Science Fair.
  • The Ridgeline Science Fair will be on Tuesday, March 11 and it is required that students complete a science experiment and presentation project to go with it.  This project is due Friday, March 7.
  • The UO Science Fair is on Saturday, March 8 and is optional.  If your student is thinking about entering the UO Science Fair there was a registration form that was sent home that included an option for a scholarship that is reportedly very easy to get.

A couple groups this week are focusing on multiples and factors.  Several others are studying decimals, specifically place value and adding decimals.  The group working on fractions learned how to divide them this week.

Creative Expressions - After wrapping up the latest Creative Expressions classes with an amazing display of talent at the final showcase, we are ready to start planning for the next round.  Do you have a talent or skill that you would like to share with the students at Ridgeline?  Are you available between noon and 1:15pm on Fridays?  If so, this could be your opportunity to share a skill with a small group of Upper Elementary kids.
This round’s sessions will run from 12:00 pm to 1:15pm, on the following Fridays:

February 28
March 7
March 14
March 21

In the effort to make Progress Reports as informative as possible, they are going to be sent out one week later, on February 21st.

Pasta Dinner February 21st   5-7pm

Wondering About Ridgeline’s Middle School? – 5th and 6th grade parents and students are invited to a Middle School information session with Middle School teacher Jon Labrousse. Learn all about what Ridgeline’s Middle School has to offer, Thursday, February 27th, 7-7:45pm in the Middle School classroom.

Weather Related Consequences:
Due to melting snow and plenty of rain, our playground field is quite muddy.  Therefore, it is out of commission until things dry up a bit.  Also, if your child could bring indoor and outdoor shoes to ease this transition that would be wonderful!
