Jenny's Weekly Update 2-10-14

posted Feb 10, 2014, 10:57 AM by Cynthia Friedman
Hello again! We are having a very busy, short week!

Academics:
Science:
This week we are finishing up Exploring Plate Tectonics on the Web, where students were introduced to the many pieces that make up plate tectonics through a guided internet exploration.

In addition, students needed to choose a method and idea to research on the topic of plate tectonics. There were 15 choices from researching the volcanic history of Oregon to making a children's book. I am excited to see all their hard work completed by February 21.

Reading:
This week we started new reading groups. Each group voted on a selection of 4-5 books. Here is what they chose: The Time Machine by H.G. Wells,Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit, Lionboy by Zizou Corder and Say What? by Jane Yolen. Some of these titles I had to check out from the Eugene Public Library, and I can only have them out for 3 weeks. Therefore, we are on a bit of a time crunch to complete them. I have faith that our students are vivacious readers and are up for the challenge. Each week, in addition to meeting and discussing the books, students are required to complete a Reading Response in the form of a letter. The letter will include two paragraphs, one will summarize what they have read and the other will be their own reflection.

Writing:
We are continuing with Editing Rules. This week we are practicing four rules that focus on ending punctuation.

Math:
4th graders are studying Factors and Multiples.
5th graders are reviewing multiplication word problems and then moving onto decimals.
6th graders are focusing on multiplying fractions.

Spelling:
We are now all on the same page. Every Monday morning the entire class is given a spelling test with words that range in difficulty. Students will choose words to practice that they misspelled. They need to have a total of 10 words to practice for the week. If they only missed 7 words then they will choose 3 more words from the list that they think they will use frequently. They will then practice these words Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with a follow up test Friday morning.

In other news:
