Dear Middle School Family,

Welcome back! I hope you’ve had a fun-filled summer. Carrie and I are already back at Ridgeline, preparing for this year’s middle school adventure. We’re going to have a blast and learn a lot.

Couple of quick things:
Class Meeting on Thursday, September 11

We’ve got a lot of changes in the works for this school year, so I want to strongly encourage you to attend our Class Meeting on Thursday, September 11, from 6-7pm in the middle school classroom. We’re making the leap to the national Common Core State Standards for mathematics this year, so we’re going to be taking a different approach to math, altogether. I think it’s a positive step forward, and I think you will, too. I’ll also talk about our Project-based approach to Life Science and Global Studies this year. We have a lot of ground to cover. I hope to see you there!

First Week of School “Retreat”
Keeping with tradition (and good practice), the first week of school, Wednesday through Friday, will be dedicated to community building activities. We’ll be outside most of every day at Kincaid Park (just below Parker Elementary, across the creek). We’ll spend the week working together, taking responsible risks that help us know ourselves and each other a little better.

We’re going to be physically active all week. Please be sure your student brings plenty of food (that doesn’t need to be microwaved) and a water bottle. Also please make sure they’re dressed for ‘outdoor P.E.,’ and slather on some sunscreen in the morning, for good measure. We’ll be back at school around 1pm each day (before it gets too hot).

It’s going to be a fun-filled week. We’ll laugh and play together, and do a lot of work, processing the values and attributes of a healthy, supportive, engaging community. It’s important work. We’ll get started with our academic work on Monday, September 8.

Spencer Butte Hike, Friday, September 12
We’re fortunate to be located in such a beautiful natural environment! We’ll be leaving first thing Friday morning, the second week of school, to hike to the top of Spencer’s Butte for lunch, and back. We’ve done it many times in the past, and will definitely make it back to school in time for dismissal at 1:15pm. Please be sure to pack a hearty lunch and plenty of water, and please make sure your student wears sensible walking shoes. It’s about 7 miles round trip. We can do it! It’s a great bonding experience, and a fun accomplishment. I’ll remind you next week, as well.

That’s it, for now. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

We’re looking forward to another great year!

Jon and Carrie
