Jon's Weekly Update 5-30-12

Dear Middle School Family,

We're hitting the rapids this week: Lots of fun and excitement is going on as we complete this school year's journey.

We've just finished reading Lord of the Flies.  Most of the students really got into it!  I was particularly impressed with our conversations, and the deep connections the students have been making between the book and the BANDS simulation we've been running all year.  Government and 'civilized' society are systems we take for granted.  We started the BANDS simulation from scratch with 5 small groups of hunter/gatherers, and have slowly grown the need to make managerial decisions about how to live and cooperate. The book is a perfect wrap-up to the question: why do we need governmental systems?

Next year, we'll continue to deepen the simulation with larger populations, trade agreements and negotiations between nations, and immigrants (7th graders!).

This week (May 29-June 1), we'll be wrapping up most of our academic work.  We're writing an essay about Lord of the Flies, pulling the pieces together for our small systems of government, and finishing up math chapters and testing.  I've attached all twelve of the Vocabulary Units to the "Mastery Test" assignment in Jupiter Grades, in case your student didn't save theirs, and wants to study.

The students are putting together a Masquerade Ball this Friday, June 1 from 6:30-8:30pm.  The invitation should have come home last week.  Sounds like a fun volunteer opportunity for parents...

Most of next week (June 4-7--no school Friday, June 8th) will be dedicated to preparing for Field Day on Tuesday (June 5) and 8th Grade Graduation on Thursday (June 7).  We'll also be packing up the Middle School classroom and moving all the MS materials from the "Room of Requirement" to the MS classroom in preparation for the move.

We have to have the whole kaboodle packed and ready to go by end of the school day, Thursday, June 7.

The Adventure Trip to Opal Creek starts on Monday, June 11.  We need to be at school by 7:15am.  We'll be back in town at 3pm on Thursday, June 14.  If your student chooses not to participate in the Adventure Trip, they must attend school that week.  Please let me know as soon as possible if your student won't be attending the trip, so I can make arrangements for them (probably a lot of community service work, helping the lower el and kindergarten classes get packed for the move).

We sincerely need help from 7th grade families for the 8th Grade Graduation on Thursday, June 7 from 6:30-8:00pm.  Our hope is to create a tradition of 7th grade families organizing this event so that graduates and their families can relax and celebrate together.

Right now, our plan for Graduation is to have a  an ice cream sundae bar to go with the Variety Show the students are putting on.  Jon and Carrie are working to put together the actual Graduation Ceremony.  This is an important event.  Please help us make it unforgettable.

Best,

Jon and Carrie
