Dear Middle School Family,

What an inspiring week.  These kids have been writing their, um, fingers off!  I'm so proud of the growth they've made as writers this year.

And as musicians!

After our performance last Saturday, TRUE performed at Sam Bond's Garage and Cozmic Pizza last week.  The kids sounded fantastic.  If you're on Facebook, you can see video footage of some of the performances by clicking this link: TRUE on Facebook.

Thursday Field Trips!

8th Graders!  We are leaving school at PRECISELY 8AM.  We can not wait for stragglers. It's almost a 2.5 hour drive to our destination in the woods west of Portland.    Please be at school NO LATER than 7:50am.

Bring lots of food and water.  Wear clothes suitable for climbing in trees.  Bring rain gear.

7th Graders! Please refer to Carrie's update for instructions.

UO Social Science Professor Peter Walker is going to come in to class Monday morning to help the students sort out what really happened at the Malheur Refuge in Burns, Oregon this winter.  He spent a lot of time out in Burns, interviewing people from all sides of the story. I'm super excited, and grateful for this opportunity.

The students will be questioning Professor Walker as a quotable expert to use as a reference in the essays they're writing these next two weeks.  Writing is such a hard thing to do well.  Having the opportunity to talk out and test our ideas as we're developing them is an important step.  We've been working with news articles for the last week and a half to try to understand what happened in Burns.  Professor Walker will help the students clarify their arguments with expert testimony.  This is how real writers work to find Truth, as best they can.

Good stuff.

Jon's Math Classes

We're going to start the Smarter Balanced Math Testing next week (May 23).  Just the math.  Just Jon's math classes.  The kids are ready, and I want to maximize our time for the fun projects by getting this math work out of the way.  It will also help free up the network when testing rolls into full-swing.

TRUE Ukulele Summer Camp

So far, there are only 5 students officially registered for the TRUE Summer Camp on Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 5 to August 11.  This Friday, May 20, is the deadline to register.  If your student plans to participate, please register NOW and pay later. Participation in the camp is required to participate in the summer concerts.  Payment of $75 is due by the last day of school, June 16, unless you make other arrangements with me (I'm flexible).  Scholarships are available (email me).

I'm still sorting out dates for some gigs.  We need a minimum of 10 students to make the camp happen.  I'm saying yes to concerts that I may not have a band for...  Please register!

These weeks are flying by too quickly!
