Jon's Weekly Update 5-12-11

posted May 12, 2011, 10:19 AM by Cynthia Friedman
Dear Middle School Family,

Last week's field trip out to the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest was a great success. The Canopy Connections crew from the Environmental Leadership Program at the UO did a great job teaching! Thanks David Friedman, Robin Hostick, Mark Jaeger, Tim Reed and Sue Sierralupe for helping us get the students out there. The students (and the adults!) learned a lot, and I'm proud to report that every student harnessed up and made it at least part way up into the tree.

I've posted pictures here: Canopy Pictures. The pictures can only be seen by following this link (they are not findable on the internet without it):

Unfortunately, I was with only one of the four groups, but I did manage to slip away and get pictures of one other group in action. If you took pictures of another group, please burn them to a disc, or something, and send them in, so I can share them.

We finished up our Energy Audits of all the classrooms on both campuses this week. Next week we'll be taking those results back to the classrooms to help teach all our students the small actions we can take to reduce our Carbon Footprint. Cool stuff.

Our Adventure Stories project has been a hoot. So far the students have put together Puppet Shows, Living Comic Books, and old fashioned Radio Shows (complete with sound effects!) to bring their stories to life. It's been fun to watch the students' confidence grow as they present their stories to their peers and their Celebrity Judges (Kayla and Mr. Wells!) They're really stepping up and taking risks. (And their stories just keep g etting wilder and better!)

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for the rest of May, half the students will be working in the School Garden. The other half will be working with the City of Eugene Stream Team on Tuesdays, doing maintenance work and planting on the Amazon creek. On Thursdays, they'll be working with Scott Youngblood, doing maintenance on the Ridgeline Trail. Please have them dress for the weather and bring a hearty lunch!

Hope in Action Conference. On Friday, June 3rd, we will attend the Hope in Action Conference, hosted by Partners for Sustainable Schools and Green Schools. The conference is at Alton Baker Park from 9am-1:30pm. We'll send more details the week before the conference.

The Middle School will once again host the Ridgeline Field Day! Field Day will be on June 9th at the Willard Campus from 12:45-3:00pm.

8th Grade Graduation is Tuesday, June 14th from 6-8pm. We're still sorting out the exact location, but our plan is that the 8th Graders will host a Dinner Show for their parents.

VOLUNTEER HELP:
We need two or three parents to help us carpool up to the Ridgeline Trail on Thursday, May 19 and 26, from 1pm-3pm. Please zap me an e-mail if you can join us.

Hope in Action Conference. Join us on the LTD adventure to the conference! It's going to be a great day!

Please join us in the Garden! There are students working in the School Garden Mondays through Thursday for the rest of the school year. They'd love your help and expertise. Ask me about our Garden Committee and how you can help steer where the Garden's going.

8th Grade Graduation Volunteers! We are seeking two or three 7th grade parents to help the students organize the graduation dinner (we don't want the parents of the 8th graders to have to do any work for this). It's kind of a "pay it forward" opportunity.
--------------------------------------------
That's it for now. Have a great weekend.

Jon and Sisy
