Dear Middle School Family,

The Middle School Dance was a lot of fun last night.  Thank you to Raven for organizing it, and a huge thanks to her (and Jeremy's) entire extended family (Mija, Cliff, Russ, and Beth)  for chaperoning!  There were snacks, and costumes, a serious sound system, and even a professional 'photo booth!'  The kids had a ball.  And then they got the gym cleaned up in record time. Very impressive!

This should have been a very quiet week at home on the homework front.  We finished the first two episodes of Steven Spielberg's mini-series, "Into the West." Your student should have all of their research about their Native American tribe completed this week, and should have the final presentation completed by next Friday, April 22.  We will begin presentations in class on April 25, wrapping up by April 28.

UOTeachOUT Leadership Summit

I have been invited to bring a Leadership team to this extremely important event on Thursday, May 12, from 9am to 2:30pm.  Here's the skinny from the UO:

"This summit is an important opportunity to provide academic enrichment and leadership experiences to LGBTQ students and their allies, a historically underserved, marginalized, and stigmatized student population.  It is also an important opportunity for in-service and pre-service teachers to receive professional development on curriculum and school-wide culture related to LGBTQ issues in schools.

The past 30 years of research on gender identity and sexual orientation indicate that the pervasively hostile environment of society in general and schools in particular toward these youth results in academic achievement and attainment gaps for these students. The annual Youth Leadership Summit offers these students an opportunity to be celebrated, offered leadership opportunities, and benefit from enrichment programming which can sometimes be more difficult for them to access within the general population."

When I explained the purpose of the Summit and asked who was interested in participating, well over half the class eagerly raised their hands.  Ridgeline truly is a remarkable place.  Unfortunately, space is limited.  I've created a short "application" for students to explain their desire to participate, and how they feel the summit will help them become a stronger advocate and leader in our school and community in support of LGTBQ students and their families.

This is important work, and it's important that the students who represent Ridgeline at the event are committed to making a positive, proactive contribution. Applications are due by Friday next week, April 22.  Please let me know if you would like more information.

We are feeling the parent volunteer love this year, I have to tell you.  Thank you.

Parent Chaperones: Ethan Lodwig, David Klausman, Jen Hornsby, Beth Straw, Mija Andrade, Talicia Brown, Steve Selph

TRUE Summer Camp

Thanks for the positive response about summer rehearsals.  After checking in with the kids and some parents (and my family!), here's the proposal:

Dates:  July 5-August 11, Tuesdays and Thursdays (12 Sessions)

Time: 10:30am-12pm (18 hours + Performances TBA)

Location: My classroom

Cost: $75 (I'm donating $25 from each student's registration to Ridgeline's Capital Campaign.)

This is ONLY open to current Ridgeline middle school students.  I know this is a ways off, but I need at least 10 students to make this feasible.  I need to know by the end of April if this is a go, so please let me know ASAP.  If the interest is there, I'll set up a registration system, so we can make it official.  We already have two gigs set up for this summer!

Please let me know if I missed anything!
