Dear Middle School Family,

The slow march through the Smarter Balanced testing continues.  We're taking it at an easy pace.  We've eased off on the class work a bit, and are trying to take more breaks to blow off steam from the concentrated work periods.

The hardest part for all of us is the strict rules!  The kids are so used to just getting up and using the bathroom, or casually taking a break, that it's been awkward for all of us to have to raise hands and wait for approval before getting out of our seat and taking care of business.

Oddly, rather than frustrate me, this restrictive environment has heightened my appreciation for the environment your children spend their daily lives engaged in.  They are used to owning their learning environment, not being controlled by it.

We'll be done with testing at the end of the month, and the rest of the school year is absolutely packed with unforgettable fun.  Much of it is scientific...

This Week in Science! (From Carrie)

This week we transitioned from studying Natural Selection to Ecosystems and the Cycle of Matter.  We created models of food chains and then combined them to create a food web. We examined the complex interdependence of organisms in an ecosystem, and the systems reliance on sun, water, air, and soil.

We have two field trips lined up in May to bring the students' Life Science learning to life!  We need your help:

Field Trip: May 18, all day, WREN Science Field Trip, Autzen Stadium

We're planning to use our LTD bus pass allowance to get the students out to Autzen Stadium, but we need 2 parent volunteers to make this field trip a success.  We'll leave school at 9am and be back by 3:15pm.

Field Trip: May 28, all day, Canopy Connections, H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest

This is Ridgeline's fifth year participating in this amazing experience in the woods.  Carrie and I can transport 8 students in our own vehicles.  We need transportation for 19 more students.  We need to leave school by 8am, and we'll be back to school by 4pm.  The field trip site is in Blue River, Oregon, about 50 miles east of Eugene.

Drive a bunch of awesome kids out there, and spend the day with us deep in the woods.  We get to climb 100 feet up a tree! This is our 5th year participating in this outstanding experience.  It's one of my favorite field trips of all time, every time.

Ukulele Rehearsals

Over half the group has to leave at 4pm, anyway.  Henceforth, after-school ukulele rehearsals will end at 4pm.  Attendance is super important for the next three weeks.  We perform at Cozmic Pizza on May 9, and we go into the Studio to record on May 13.  We're refining a very few songs.    Sixteen out of our 27 students are participating.  Awesome.

8th Grade Graduation

We still need a 7th grade parent to lead the Ice Cream Social at the Jun 4 Graduation ceremony.  All you have to do is buy the ice cream (Ridgeline will reimburse), set up tables and bowls, and organized a team of 7th grade parents to serve ice cream.  Pay it forward.  It's going to be a blast.

I'm going to be at the Peace Jam Conference at the University of Oregon with five of our 8th graders all day Saturday and Sunday (20 hours of Peace activism!  Yes!).  The downside is, I'm going to fall behind on grading this week...

So many details!  There's more!  (I'll fill you in next week.)

Enjoy this sunny weekend!

Jon and Carrie
