Dear Middle School Family,

Spring is sprung. We spent some time these last couple of weeks firming up plans for the Outdoor Classroom's garden space. We even hauled the raised garden-bed frames that Erik (Julien's dad) built with the kids, into place to test out the feasibility of our on-paper plans. We moved those puppies all over the field, and we've got a plan.

We're ready to get down to business. There's going to be a huge Ridgeline community work party on Saturday, April 11, to clean up the campus. One of the major tasks is going to be preparing the field for the next phase of building, that the Middle School will be doing this Spring.

Saturday, April 11, is a great volunteer opportunity. Details will be coming soon.

While we're on the topic of volunteering, we have a couple of very real needs in the Middle School community:

 VOLUNTEER NEEDS
Tractor and Truck/Trailer!
We really need to level the north field and haul the dirt away. The foundation and floor of the Outdoor Classroom required a mountain of excavation. It's mostly gone, but we need to dig up and haul the rest of it away! Not only that, the dirt we dig up for the ADA path and the Garden Classroom floor is going to unearth way more than we can put to use.

We need the truck/trailer more than the tractor. We can dig it out by hand, but we need the means to move it out of here! Help! We want to get the field leveled before April 11th.

Wednesday Studio Project Mentors
Meaningful work is our ultimate goal in life. Montessori is very clear about this. All our learning pursuits, practical and academic, should lead us to our Purpose. For most of us, this means we have to try on a lot of possibilities before we find a fit.

We're starting Studio Wednesdays 'fresh' after Spring Break. I've tried to make this work so many ways in the last 5 years that it borders on absurd. The ideal we're striving for is each student engaging in a creative project that fulfills them. The fact is, most of our students are too young and inexperienced to have a clue what to do with an hour and a half of studio time to work on personal creative projects. Without guidance, that is.

We've seen the best success, and most personal satisfaction and sense of accomplishment, when the students work with mentors on intentional projects. Dave (Allison's dad), Mija (Raven's mom), and Daniel (Gia's dad), have been working with small groups of students on Art and Acting projects.

Dave will lead an African drumming class after Spring Break. Carrie and I will also lead classes. Would you be willing to commit to the 5 Wednesdays after Spring Break from 1:30-3pm? Gardening, outdoor furniture building, painting, yoga, dance, Frisbee golf...

Help these emerging adults find their passion. Please? E-mail me ASAP!

Happy Spring Break!
Jon and Carrie
