Jon's weekly Update 3-2-12

posted Mar 2, 2012, 10:18 AM by Cynthia Friedman

Dear Middle School Family,

I've attached the permission form for the March field trip to Florence in case the hard copy doesn't make it into your hands (went home Thursday). The trip is March 20-22. We need the permission slips back by next Friday, March 9, so we know how many students can participate. If you've got camping gear you can lend us: coolers, full-sized (full!) propane tanks, canopies, BIG pots, pans, etc., it will really help us out.

Reminder: EVERY MONDAY, we head outside to work in the Garden and out at Tugman Park--we split the class into two crews. Please help remind your students to dress for the weather, and plan for a change of clothes if they have activities after school on Mondays. As the weather improves, we'll be working Wednesday afternoons, as well...

We've got some DEEP process work going on right now. The students will present their Essential Inventions Projects to the class next week in lieu of Current Events. We can't put these off any longer. They've been given templates for note-taking. We've developed potential outline formats for their presentation, and I've given them a 'fall back' outline to use (it's online, in Lucid Chart). They've been encouraged to gather visual aids to help us understand and 'see' what they're talking about. (Pictures work, as do hands-on materials.) I have sat down with every student individually for at least 30 minutes, helping them organize their research and focus their presentation.

Help them out! Be an audience. Their job is to convince you why the invention they chose is ESSENTIAL to the evolution/development of humanity. How it works is important, sure, but WHY it's important is the aim of the project. Some of them made difficult choices, like Crayons, and could not be dissuaded. If they can make the case... I'll be thrilled!

The University of Oregon Scientists were back this Wednesday. Our Science Fair Projects are coming along swimmingly with their support. (We're still in the early planning stages...) Today, we explored, in depth (again), what makes a good (scientific) question: Make it interesting, specific, and MEASURABLE. The Scientific Process is one of the most important tools your students will master before they leave Ridgeline.

Note: Entry in the UO Science Fair is optional, but completing a project worthy of entry is required. The UO Scientists will be back again on March 14 to help us refine our project plans and check on our progress. The UO Science/Invention Fair is April 21. Entry fee is $20.

There is information about scholarships for entry fees (and even materials for the projects!) at this website:
http://oco.uoregon.edu/spice/events/science-fair-2012 Please talk with your student about their plans. The sooner they apply for a scholarship, the better. I'm happy to help!

We presented our Mythical Puppet Shows to the Kindergarten on Wednesday. They were delighted! We're going to do one last show for the Lower Elementary students on Friday in the Upper Gym at 12:30. If you can make it, you should. The Middle Schoolers have done an amazing job putting these productions together. 'Amazing' is not a word I use freely to describe student work. They've sincerely done exceptional (delightful!) work.

Thanks for your support in making our first Ukulele gig at the Spaghetti Dinner a success. On Wednesday, when I asked, only 4 kids were coming (and one of them was mine!). These (concerts and puppet shows) are the kind of experiences that build unity and trust in a group. Risk is where we can best demonstrate our support for each other.

This year just gets better and better...
Best,
Jon and Carrie
