Dear Middle School Family,

Report Cards came home on Thursday.  The school year is officially halfway over.  We've seen tremendous growth across the board in our community since the beginning of the year.  We set the bar high in the Middle School and we all work hard to help each other rise to our potential.  

Please remember that grades are only one (small) measure of growth, and sometimes don't accurately reflect the true depth of a student's "learning" at all.  What grades tell us, mostly, is whether a student is completing their assignments and turning them in.  Each of these is an important step in the process, of course, but as we all know, there are many ways of learning and doing.  And each of us have our own Way, our own Path.

That said, our learning goals continue to be mainly skill-based: we're more concerned with what the students can DO with the subject area Content, than their ability to recall "facts."  Building the communication skills to be successful at school and life is the main business or our academic work: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic.  The higher the quality of the subject area Content, of course, the richer their experience, the deeper their engagement, the more personally valuable their production of academic work.  

The content we're exploring in Science and the Humanities is DEEPLY important.  Perspective-changing. Life-changing, if we're doing it right.  (We're doing our best, as a community, to do it Right.)

All the other work: taking care of your Self, deconstructing the Media, making Music, taking care of your Physical Fitness, not to mention the artistic and practical life skills that students engage in every single day...  I am proud to be a participant in this Learning Environment.  Every day is a growth experience, the way Life should be, every day, for all of our life.

We, as teachers, are doing our best to provide a learning environment for our students that we wish had been available for us when we were struggling through this awkward, self-conscious, self-destructive period in our lives.  This is the most exciting and difficult time in our lives!  The transition from being a child, who is cared for, to becoming an Independent Adult.  It starts here.

Report cards are a reality check. (Grades have already changed since they were printed.)  You can check your student's progress at any time in Jupiter Ed.  We're happy to meet and strengthen our working relationship with your family in support of your student's success.  Just say the word.  We're in this together.
