Jon's Weekly Update 12-20-13

posted Dec 20, 2013, 11:25 AM by Cynthia Friedman

Dear Middle School Family,

The last few weeks have been... uneventful, because of all those snow days.  There's not much to report...  We spent this week wrapping up the Cycle and kicking off our "Gift to the World" projects.  (More on that after the Break.)

I have only three big announcements to share with you:

Ukulele Performance! January 16 at Cozmic Pizza

North Eugene High School's Ukulele Orchestra has invited us to participate in their fundraiser at Cozmic Pizza again this year.  Thursday, January 16, 2014.  Ridgeline will open the show at 7pm.  It's a sliding scale, suggested donation, type of event to raise funds for our ukulele programs.  We're going to split the proceeds between our programs.

This is an optional event, requiring extra rehearsals (see below). Please encourage your student to participate!  It's going to be a blast!

I'm very grateful for our continued relationship with NEHS's program.  They've been very supportive of our program.  Please help spread the word!

Ukulele Group Rehearsals

We're going to start weekly after school ukulele rehearsals right away, when we come back from Winter Break.  Our first three rehearsals will be from 3:15-4:30:

Tues., January 7, Thurs., January 9, Tues., January 14.

To participate in the concert, your student must attend two of  the three extra rehearsals.

After the January rehearsal, we'll meet on Thursdays from 3:15-4:30pm.

Canopy Connections Field Trip!

We're going out to the old-growth forest again this year to study forest ecology in the woods, and go up 100 feet into the canopy!  Mark your calendars.  Thursday, May 1 we'll spend the whole day in the woods up the McKenzie.  This is our 4th year participating in this program, led by University of Oregon Environmental Science students.

In the past, we've always opted out of the overnight option, but this year, I think we're going to go for it!  For $25 per student,  we'll cover transportation, lodging for Wednesday night (April 30), and dinner and breakfast.  Scholarships will be available.

This trip has become one of the highlights of our year.  We have 4 drivers/chaperones, including Carrie and I.  We need 3 or 4 more chaperones to help with transportation and supervision for 30 students, total.  I'll be connecting later to firm up details, but if you know for certain you'd like to join us on this trip, please let me know.  You will be reimbursed for mileage.

If you don't want to stay out there, but would like to help with transportation out (from Ridgeline on Wednesday afternoon around 4pm) and/or back (from Blue River on Thursday afternoon at 2pm), that would be a huge help, as well.

We have a lot of exciting learning opportunities lined up for our community in 2014.  Enjoy your time together with family and friends this Winter Break.  We'll see your kids back in school on Tuesday, January 7!

Happy Holidays,

Jon and Carrie
