Dear Middle School Family,

Things are cranking up towards the holidays here at Ridgeline.  This Wednesday is Stone Soup.  Come join us.  The Middle School Uke group will be performing around 12:30pm.  Please be sure to send in Veggies on Tuesday.  Another short week this week, as well, for Thanksgiving.

We need someone to help us out by volunteering to take home a sack of classroom laundry (hand towels and rags) every week.

We're rolling into Cycle 4 this week, starting our first Science Cycle.  We did a simple surface tension lab in class this week to help introduce the students to the process of asking questions, running a lab, and writing a report of our discoveries.  Pretty fun stuff.  Our science curriculum will focus on applying the scientific method to answer questions and solve problems (and communicate our findings!).  Important skills no matter what we're doing.

Current Events are now a Homework assignment.  We have newspapers here in class that students are welcome to take home with them if they don't have internet access at home.  Please note: the focus of this assignment is to provide a simple, structured speaking opportunity.  While it's fun and interesting to read about what's going on in the world, we're finding that looking for a current event on the internet can become a full time job--please help your student manage their time with this assignment.

I'm going to keep it short this week.  Here is an announcement from the team of UO architecture students who are working with our Middle School students to design our "outdoor classroom" space:

Design Bridge - is a student-run organization at the University of Oregon which works directly with the community, while enriching architecture students'knowledge. One of our projects this year is to design an outdoor interactive space at Ridgeline Montessori. The space will provide outdoor learning opportunities year-round to enrich even more of the school's curriculum. Possible elements of the program include: a greenhouse, garden beds, composting, rainwater catchment, and more!

With the collaboration of students from 7th and 8th grade we have started our design process. In the current stage we are reaching out to all Ridgelinestudents, parents, and staff to help us in the design scheming process.  What ideas do you have for an outdoor classroom? What kind of learning do you think should happen here? What will it look like? We would like to answer these questions by leading a design activity and discussing the school's community vision of this project. This will be a great opportunity for you to have your thoughts, concerns, and creative solutions heard by the design team!

If you are interested in learning more about the project and sharing your ideas, join us Tuesday, November 20th, 5:30-7:30pm at Ridgeline for an evening of creative thinking! You will be expressing your ideas through drawings, collage, model making, and much more!
