Jon's Update 5-20-11

Dear Middle School Family,

Spring is finally here! Yay! Good timing. The kids have been busy at work in the garden and this week we started working with the City of Eugene's Stream Team on their habitat restoration project on the Amazon Creek. Super cool stuff. Outside is such a wonderful place to be.

As you can imagine, the students are having a harder time focusing on their academic work in the morning as the school year comes to a close. Please encourage them to stick with it and do their best. There's still much work to be done.

We're making one final shift in the math program that will hopefully open up an opportunity for self-directed study this summer. Most of the class has started work on the Khan Academy Math Program instead of book-work. (Check it out: www.khanacademy.org) It is a brilliantly organized program: assessment and instruction built into one. It st arts with simple addition, and builds a math foundation all the way through pre-calculus. The whole class will be working on it by the end of the year, and I'll be able to keep up with their progress through the summer, and know exactly where they're at for math placement in the Fall. Best yet, the students are really enjoying it!

Tuesdays and Thursdays are outside work days through the rest of the year. Please encourage your students to dress appropriately.

June 3 is our field trip to the Hope in Action Conference at Alton Baker Park.
June 9 is field day, and our Middle Schoolers are running the show.
June 14 is 8th Grade Graduation.

Volunteers are needed to help all three of these events succeed. Please help!

Have a great weekend,

Jon and Sisy
