Dear Middle School Families,

I am inspired to share that I look forward to every day I spend with your students. We start off each day with our morning meeting, rich in community and laughter Student table groups rotate each week to lead us through the routine. They begin with current events, take care of attendance and group business, and wrap it up with a group activity. I am fortunate to sit back and appreciate their independence, creativity and imagination.

Middle School Adventure Trip--Florence

Read-A-Thon  – Jenifer Hackstadt is spearheading the Read-A-Thon specifically to fund our PE, art, and foreign language programs. Thank you Jenifer!  Packets came home last Friday.  The students decided our classroom goal will be 560 challenges total (about one challenge a day per student).  Please encourage your student to gather pledges and read, read, read!

Personal World – Have you ever wondered who made the very first collage?  Dadaism is a European artist’s movement that arose in 1916.  This form of artistic expression was, at that time. a revolutionary response to the changes in society brought on by the industrial revolution, and the horrors of the first world war.  This week we observed and discussed Dada works from that era, brainstormed ideas for creating our own semi-autobiographical collages, and got started on the collage making process. By the way, if you have magazines at home and work you’d like to donate to art, we can use them!

Science – How is density measured?  What is the standard density by which all other densities are compared?  What is the relationship between kinetic energy and potential energy?  What kind of astronomical bodies compose the solar system, and what is the Astronomical Unit used to measure distances in our solar system? Is it the same unit used to measure distances in space?  These are just a sampling of a few questions covered in science this week.  Great dinner table conversation if you asked me.

Canopy Connections

A big shout to parents of 7th graders.  Permission slips for the Canopy connections field trip came home Friday April 23rd.
