Carrie's Update 4-1-2020

Our Middle School Family,
India and I so look forward to trying out Zoom as a tool for reconnecting with our middle school community, today between 1 and 2 pm!
Students are to access the link sent to you by Jon in the email titled "Middle School Starts Wednesday, April 1--Carrie's Homeroom" or "Middle School Starts Wednesday, April 1-Jon's Homeroom." We will meet with our Block I from 1:00-1:30, and our Block II from 1:30 - 2:00. These same links should work for our meetings scheduled for the same times over the next two days.
Once your student clicks the link, they will wait in a "waiting room." As the hosts, India or I will allow them to access the meeting only if they are signed in using their current Ridgeline email address. For student safety, India and I will not allow entry of any email addresses that aren't clearly those of current Ridgeline students.
Once students have been allowed to enter the meeting, they will continue to be muted until they raise their hands and are called on. This is to ensure that everyone has a chance to be heard as we adjust to this new forum.
If your student has questions, responses, or issues with the technology (they can't hear, see, etc.), they can communicate these with India and me (the hosts) at any time via the chat function. NOTE: If a student is having difficulty hearing, try turning off video, and make sure to let us know using the chat feature.
We will start the meeting with a share round.  Students are to come prepared with a short response (10-20 seconds) to the classic Rose and Thorn prompt, "Share something you enjoyed over break, and something that you could really have done without."
After we go around the circle with this warm up, India and I will introduce their initial Check-In assignments in Jupiter Ed, and answer student questions. We are approaching this next week or so as an adjustment period.  For this week, we will only have a very few orientation and Review assignments in Jupiter Ed. These are to get students used to this new way of accessing and turning in different types of assignments and surveys through the Jupiter Ed forum, to help India and I grow familiar with using it in these same new ways, and find out what materials and resources students have/need to continue moving forward.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to India and myself to reestablish our connections with and between our students in real facetime. As much as possible, we plan on using Zoom to resume our routine interactions in our established science and math groups.

Parents, please connect through Gmail if you have any questions. I am sending this same communication to your students through Jupiter Ed.  They may respond with questions through that forum or gmail, for now.
Together, teachers, students and families, we will forge the path forward.
Warmest Regards,
Carrie and India
