Diana's Update 9-12-19

The children are coming along beautifully in learning the grace and courtesy expectations required for maintaining a peaceful classroom. They are laying out rugs for floor work, taking care to leave space for walking around them. They are respectfully handling the materials—two hands holding carefully, two feet walking steadily—from shelves to workspace and back. They are responding appropriately to the bell, “freezing” their bodies when they hear the chime and listening to the message that follows. They are taking on the responsibility of cleaning up after themselves. Tables are being wiped and floors swept.

The children’s arrival routine is extensive and they are becoming more independent carrying out each step. We encourage you to send your child in outerwear that they can manage as independently as possible. Please be sure outerwear is in good repair as some children (and teachers) are experiencing difficulty with the fasteners.

The focus these first days and weeks will be on orienting to our new environment and community. Our first games and songs help us in learning each other’s names. The different materials are introduced gradually so the students have an opportunity to practice their correct use including how to take them from the shelves and when finished, return them to their specific locations ready for the next person. We are discussing different ways to consider others so that we can support each other’s learning and growing, in work and play.

This week our Shape and Say story is “The Time-tapping Tool,” featuring the letter t and its sound.

Music and P.E. began this week.

Wednesday we took our first class walk on the Rexius Trail along Amazon Creek, practicing crossing the street and staying on the trail. Over the next few weeks, we will increase the length of our adventure.

Also, be sure to keep a change of clothes in your child’s backpack.

Dismissal safety: Parents please gather closer to the fence so there is enough room for others to pass without having to step into the drive-through.

Upcoming events:

  • The kindergarten parent meeting is set for Wednesday, September 18, 6:00-6:45. "One mission, One Vision, One School, One Community"

The year is just beginning and it is a great time to build great habits!  Being in school, on time, every day is important. Good attendance is strongly linked to academic, social, and emotional success.

We believe that students and families that feel they are included in the school community are more likely to show up consistently

We believe that good attendance will allow your child to fully contribute to and fully benefit from the classroom community.

We believe good attendance will not only build strong academics, but also build strong socially and emotionally capable humans.

Thank you for learning and growing with us!
