Dana's Weekly Update 9-27-12

Dear Families,
It was great to see all of you at our class picnic and meeting last night! I appreciated the time we had at the beginning of the evening to eat together and visit. I am truly enjoying your students, and it is nice to get a chance to meet with everyone as a family. I hope that the time gave you a peek into your child’s day and a little more information about our goals and expectations for the year. Thank you to those of you who signed up to help out in our classroom. We still need helpers for our morning work time from 9:00-11:30 Monday through Thursday. This is a crucial time when students are working independently. Some students could benefit from additional adult assistance as this is the time that I am giving math lessons and am not always able to meet with students individually. It would be super to have helpers to work with individual students on follow up math work, writing assignments, reading and understanding directions, and setting goals on their weekly work plans. It truly does take a village and it is a great chance to get to see your child in another setting. The students love having their parents at school!

Thank you to my field trip chaperones Rozelle, Talicia, Cherri, Monique, Chris, Rachael and Robin for joining us at the Museum of Natural and Cultural History. We had a fantastic time learning about the native populations of Oregon and about how their lives were shaped by the environments in which they lived. The student gathered a lot of great information that they will be incorporating into their research projects that will be presented this coming Wednesday.

As a reminder, please look for your child’s work plan, which comes home every Thursday. It should have specific work listed in the academic boxes and should have a completed and signed self-reflection on the back. Please take a few moments to talk with your child about the work they did each week and sign their self-reflection. Work plans are due back the following Monday, although I encourage students to return them Friday morning. On Friday afternoons, please watch for the green Ridgeline folders. They often have important school information. Please have students return those folders on Monday morning so we can refill them for the following week.

I am including attachments of the previous weekly update installments to this email. I recently learned that teachers generally send their weekly messages to families via email, whereas mine have simply been posted on my weekly Ridgeline website under Dana’s Classroom. I hope that everyone has been checking this site to read about our classroom, but to streamline the process; I will now be sending these as email documents as well. Thanks for bearing with me as I get to learn the routines of Ridgeline. J

As always, please be sure to email or call me with any questions or concerns at any time. Open communication allows us to be sure we are supporting your child both here at school and at home.
