Dear Families,

Spring is in the air! I hope you all had a chance to enjoy it during our Spring Break week. We jumped back into our routine this week with some of these activities:

History: We are off and traveling the Oregon Trail! After packing our (simulated) wagons and gathering information, the wagon trains finally left Independence, Missouri and have spent several days on the trail. Our wagon trains consist of 7-8 families each, with a huge variety of backgrounds, expertise... and opinions! The kids are keeping a trail journal in the perspective of their trail character and they have been doing a fantastic job! It has been very motivating for many of the kids, and they are doing a great job weaving in the information we are learning and developing “side stories” about others they are traveling with in this 6 month journey to Oregon! Stay tuned!

Science: We are beginning a unit on the biomes of the world. We have begun learning about the five major biomes (forest, desert, grassland, tundra and aquatic) and will be learning more about the interdependence of the organisms found there and about the way they are adapted to their environment.

Conferences: Spring conferences are coming up next week, April 11th and 12th. Please make sure that you check the sign-up in the lobby to schedule your time. If you are not able to make it in during the school hours, you can give Kayla a call at the office or email me and we will let you know what is available. I am looking forward to talking to each of you about your fabulous child!

OAKS: It is almost time for our class to participate in the yearly, state-required standardized testing. We have reviewed the computer format of the tests and are doing a little practice work, including a review of test-taking strategies. We will take the tests during the week of April 15th.

Oregon Trail Field Trip: Our class will be heading to the Linn County Museum in Brownsville on Tuesday, April 23rd. The museum has one of the few surviving “prairie schooners” that actually traveled on the trail! We will be given a guided tour of the museum, learning about the Oregon Trail and the early pioneers. We will then cross the street to the Moyer House, a beautifully preserved home that is decorated in period furniture where we will be shown around by docents in costume. We will learn about how some of Oregon’s early settlers lived when they finally made it through the arduous journey! Look for the permission slip in your child’s Friday folder. We will need drivers/chaperones for the trip, please contact me if you are interested.

Creative Expressions: We will be beginning a new session of classes next week and are planning to have some fun new additions, including Frisbee golf, Chinese culture and art, and a basketball class.

End of the Year Adventure Trip: After much research and discussion, the class has voted to head to Tugman State Park, near Coos Bay, this year for our Adventure Trip. We will be leaving from school on Tuesday, June 4th and will spend the nights of the 4th and 5th, heading back to school on the 6th. I will send out more information about this trip soon, but please check your schedule and see if you are available to help chaperone. We are hoping for 5 additional adults who are able to transport kids and stay in the yurts with the students, including some dads for the “boys’ yurts.”

Upcoming Events:
LAUGHING PLANET – Monday April 8th
CONFERENCES – Thursday April 11th and Friday April 12th
First DesignBridge Work Party (volunteers needed!) – Sat. April 13th
OBOB State Competition – Cheer on our team! In Salem, Sat. April 13th

Thanks for all you do for your great students!
