Dana's Weekly Update 4-17-15

posted Apr 20, 2015, 8:59 AM by Cynthia Friedman

Dear Families,

Science Fair Homework: This week’s homework:  Type up all the remaining needed information for the science presentation board. Students need to  write up, in final draft form, the needed information for their project boards.  This includes the abstract, question, background information, hypothesis, research design, results in a data table and analyzed in a graph, discussion and references.  Many of these pieces should already be completed if your child has met our mini deadlines.  Previously due items include the question, background information, hypothesis, experimental design, data table and graph.  As we do each week, we have reviewed each aspect of the homework for the week, discussed expectations and looked at examples.  Students are bringing home their science folders (if they had returned them to school) and two handouts to help with this week’s homework in their Friday Folder.  One handout will describe what each part of the project board should contain and the other is a drawing of a sample layout.  Students are encouraged to make their project boards eye-catching with large headings and good use of color and graphs.  Visit ScienceBuddies.org for ideas and info.  Project boards are available for purchase from the school for $3.00.

J FINAL PROJECT BOARDS DUE APRIL 23TH!!!  The Ridgeline Science and Project Fair will take place Thursday, April 30th.

Field Trip to Alton Baker:  Drivers/chaperones needed.  We will be heading to Alton Baker once more this school year on Tuesday, April 28.  We are planning on doing planting, weeding and mulching at the city native nursery site.  We will also participate in a scavenger hunt at the park to review some of the facts we have been learning about plants and plant life cycles.  Our plan is to leave Ridgeline at 10:30, arriving at the work site around 11:00. We will have approximately an hour to work in the garden then will follow it up with lunch/recess from 12-12:40 and be back to ridgeline around 1:10.  Thanks to Beth, Erin and Jamie for offering to drive and chaperone.  We still need space for 16 more.  Please mark the box on the field trip letter if you are able/interested in joining us!

Smarter Balance State Testing:  Snack donations appreciated.  We have completed the first two sessions of our Smarter Balanced Language Arts test. We will have next week to finish up the test as needed, although a portion of the students have already completed the test.  Snacks were provided to students for the first two sessions.  It made the kids feel like it was a special event and it helped ensure that everyone had the energy in their systems to be ready and focused to show their best.  If you would like to support that, we would welcome additional snacks for sharing.  Ideas include crackers, pretzels, cuties, dried fruit, string cheese…
