Dear Fabulous Families:

Calendar Open House:  Remember to join us this coming Tuesday from 6:00-7:00 for a display of our amazing research calendars!  Please send back the pink RSVP form if you haven’t already.

Book Orders:  If you are interested in placing an order, please return your order and check made out to Scholastic by February 14th or, better yet, place your order online by visiting the Scholastic Web Site and entering our class code: MKWX8 or search for our class by name.  If you order online you can access all levels of book orders as well as electronic games and other resources.

History:  This week we determined the next step in our study of the growth of human civilizations:  the development of a system of written language.  This development was in response to the growing size of communities that was enabled by farming, government and the numeral system.  We realized this week how essential it was for rulers, as well as all citizens, in these larger communities to find a way to communicate beyond the customs and oral traditions used in tribes which were able to interact face-to-face on a daily basis.  The kids really struggled with a task in our classroom when the “storyteller” (me) left the area without being able to leave a list of written instructions to complete their task.  And...although I loved the feeling of being cheered when I returned, we all agreed that a the writing system was going to help everyone do their jobs more effectively.  As our civilizations continue to grow...what’s next?

Middle School Meeting: Wondering About Ridgeline’s Middle School? – 5th and 6th grade parents and students are invited to a Middle School information session with Middle School teacher Jon Labrousse. Learn all about what Ridgeline’s Middle School has to offer, Thursday, February 27, 7-7:45 P.M. in the Middle School classroom.

Science Fair Homework:  Week #2 Science Homework can be found in your child’s Friday Folder this week.  This week students will be following up on the topic and question they identified last week for their science fair project.  Please take the time to work with your child to identify the questions they may need for gathering background information for their topic.  Please have your child return the yellow page to school in their folder.  They do not need to turn in the actual background research they collected since they will want to keep that at home as they continue to work on their project.  Remember to visit ScienceBuddies.com for more ideas and support on the Science Fair process and to look at examples.  Feel free to contact me with questions.

Upcoming Events:

2/6 All School Meeting

2/7 No School (Semester Grading Day)

2/14 Progress Reports Sent home

2/17 No School (President’s Day)

Thanks for all the support you give your student!
