Dana's Weekly Update 2-27-15

Dear Families,

Science Fair Homework (week 2):  Last week your student identified possible research questions for the upcoming science fair.  I will be posting the list of approved questions on Monday, but I am also attaching the list to this message for those of you who want to get a jump on the homework.  The approved questions are ones that follow the guidelines for “good” scientific questions:  1) specific, 2) testable 3) measurable, and 4) interesting.  Your child’s homework this week is to look over the questions, and the names of the lead researchers on those questions, and generate a list of three of the questions that they would like to work on for their collaborative Science Fair projects.  If your child is already listed as a lead researcher, then he/she doesn’t have to do anything else this week.  (Unless they would like to be part of an optional additional science fair project as mentioned last week.)  Teams will be created from these lists and students will meet together to discuss the questions and their ideas.  I will create the teams based on student interests but will also be taking into account individual student’s strengths and weaknesses, personalities and work habits in order to create balanced teams that can work collaboratively and productively.  Feel free to contact me with any questions or for clarification of the homework or the upcoming fair, which will be taking place April 30th.  A copy of the approved questions is attached to this document.

NAEP testing for 4th grade students:  All 4th grade students at Ridgeline will be participating in NAEP on Wednesday, March 4th.  NAEP stands for the National Assessment of Educational Progress. It’s also known as The Nation’s Report Card, because it’s the only assessment that shows what students in every state across the country know and can do. NAEP assesses reading, mathematics, writing, science, history, civics, geography, and other subjects. The students will not be given data on their score on the test, in fact the scores will be anonymous, but they will be combined with the scores of other students to produce overall results. The results of this test help teachers and lawmakers across the country make decisions on how to best support our students.

Hours of Supervision -The school provides supervision only between the hours of 8:25 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8:25 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Fridays.  Administrative staff would like us to remind parents that students on campus outside of these times will not be supervised.

Superintendent Search: Candidate Forum March 5

The Eugene School District is searching for a new superintendent. You’re invited to meet and weigh in on the finalist candidates at a community forum on March 5. The finalists will be announced a few days before the forum.

Superintendent Candidate Community Forum:
Thursday, March 5, 6:00–8:30 p.m.
4J Education Center Auditorium
200 N. Monroe St., Eugene

At the forum, the finalist candidates will share information about themselves, then respond to questions. Community members in attendance will be asked to provide their input on the candidates.

What has happened so far: The school board is seeking to name a new superintendent this spring. Community input on the strengths and qualities desired in the district’s next leader was gathered and used in developing the position description. A citizen screening committee reviewed applications, interviewed top candidates and recommended semifinalists to the school board. The board has selected a slate of semifinalists to interview and will announce the finalists on March 2.

DDD Pasta Dinner Update from RCO – Thank you for your support Ridgeline community!  The pasta dinner was a huge success.  We raised $5,865 toward the DDD!  This brings our total to  $24,133; more than halfway to our goal!  The generosity of our community that provided the wonderful meal and the volunteers who donated their time and services are the heroes.

Coming together to reach a goal is part of the reason that Ridgeline is a success.  Our children reap the benefits of teachers, parents and the community who care about their future.  Raising funds for PE, music, a counselor and field trip scholarships continues to be the purpose of the Direct Donation Drive of the RCO.  Please contribute what you can to get us to our goal.

Math Facts Practice:  Remember to take 5 minutes each day to do a few facts that are difficult for your child to answer quickly.  Use flashcards, have your child say or write them, or log into Xtra math.
