February 20th

Dear Families,

Science Fair Homework! This week we began talking about our annual Science and Project Fair here at Ridgeline and the concurrent UO Science and Invention Fair.  As in previous years, all students in Room 8 will be expected to create an entry for the Ridgeline fair and that same project can be entered in the optional UO fair shortly there after.  We are just dipping into a review of the scientific method, beginning with a review of the steps:  1) identify a question 2) conduct background research 3) write a hypothesis 4) create a procedure and conduct an experiment to collect data 5) analyze your data and draw conclusions 6) publish and share your results.  In addition to reviewing the steps, we are focusing this week on step one, identifying a question and writing it in a format that will aid us in the creation of our projects.  In this week’s Friday Folder, you will find the homework that outlines the conversations we’ve had in class about creating a question that is specific, testable, measurable and interesting.  Please look this over with your child and read about the changes that are coming to this year’s fair in Room 8 then add your signature to the bottom.  Feel free to contact me with any questions or for clarification of the homework or the upcoming fair, which will be taking place April 30th.  An additional copy of the information and homework is attached to this update.

Parent assistant needed for web class: Lauren Russel, one of our great family volunteers, has offered to teach a web design tutorial for students next Friday, February 27th at 9:30.  She is willing to include up to 15 students and would welcome a parent to sit in and help.  In addition to teaching students about web design and hosting, she is going to help us build a classroom website that we can use for publishing student work.  Lauren will be returning one more time, most likely on March 20th, then we will be off and running.  It would be fantastic to have a “trained” parent volunteer who could help assist us if we come up with questions or need assistance in maintaining our classroom site in the future.  If you are available and interested, please let me know.

Update on our field trip to Buford:  As mentioned in our update last week, we had a great time planting, mulching and cutting back invasive blackberries at Buford.  I asked our volunteer coordinator from Friends of Buford Park to forward me a list of the species we planted.  Here it is:

- grand fir

- big leaf maple

- vine maple

- service berry

- incense cedar

- choke cherry

- Douglas fir

- Oregon white oak

- cascara

Many of the kids expressed an interest in returning to the site at the end of the school year to see the growth.  I am following up on this and hope to have another date set up for around Memorial Day.  I will keep you posted. J

DDD Pasta Dinner – Our annual Ridgeline Community Pasta Dinner DDD Event will take place this Friday, February 20th from 5-7pm in the gym. Parent volunteers are working hard to organize the evening. We will serve penne pasta with pesto and marinara, bread, and salad. (Gluten-free options will be available.)

There is no fee for the dinner, however we highly encourage families to bring their donation for the Direct Donation Drive. Visit with other Ridgeline families, sign up for escrip, bid on the classroom pasta bowls, and bring your donation for the DDD! We still need to raise $24,000 in order to pay for PE, our counselor, and music teacher this year!

Math Facts Practice:  Remember to take 5 minutes each day to do a few facts that are difficult for your child to answer quickly.  Use flashcards, have your child say or write them, or log into Xtra math.
