Dana's Weekly Update 12-20-13

Dear Families of our fabulous fourth, fifth and sixth graders,

Here’s this week’s news:
Calendars: This week has been filled with some amazing calendar progress!!! We currently have 5 students who have completed their calendars...one month ahead of the deadline and in time for holiday gift giving! I am very proud of all of the kids for the work they have done on their calendars. This project offers a great opportunity to practice not only their research, math, writing and drawing skills but also to work on meeting deadlines and setting goals! Please continue to support your student over the holiday break in their calendar work. This week’s goal was to have 8 final draft calendar pages “printer ready.” Over break, your student could even get a jump on the final deadline: 15 months “printer ready” by January 17th (12 months, cover, author’s page, bibliography...there’s also an optional dedication page).

Writing: We have been working on persuasive writing for the last couple of weeks, learning about what makes a good persuasive claim as well as some persuasive techniques that are all around us in media, politics, and even in discussions among friends. You might ask your child to point out some of these techniques in the holiday ads you see over break: “big names,” “pathos,” “ethos,” “kairos,” “logos,” and research. I am looking forward to seeing the kids apply these techniques in our next writing sample after holiday break!

Science Fair: The date for the annual SPICE science fair has finally been set! It will take place on March 7th. Our class will be beginning to talk about ideas and steps toward a successful science project in the first few weeks back from break, so if you want to use this time together to come up with some possible ideas, visit the SPICE webpage for links at
http://oco.uoregon.edu/spice/resources. Projects must utilize the scientific method. All students will complete a project that will be displayed at school, entry in the SPICE science fair is optional.

Upcoming Events:
12/23-1/6 Winter break
1/7 Classes resume
1/17 Calendars DUE!

Enjoy the holiday break! We hope it is filled with love, laughter and family!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us! Please feel free to contact us with any questions, comments or concerns.
