Dana's Weekly Update 11-7-14

posted Nov 12, 2014, 9:18 AM by Cynthia Friedman

Greetings Families,

Grandperson’s Day:  Your child should have brought home an invitation for this special day that is coming up November 14th.  The general schedule for the day is as follows:

Grandpersons’ Day Schedule

10:45: greeting, snacks

11-11:45: presentation from Lower El teacher Eric

11:45: Classroom visitations

If your child is inviting a grandperson, please have them RSVP by November 12th.

Restoration Field Trip:  I was impressed by the hard work the kids did on this fun and quick field trip.  We met up with Nicole from Walama Restoration at Alton Baker Park and visited the City of Eugene Native Nursery to collect a variety of native plant species (Nicole has promised to send me the names so I will pass those along when I hear from her.).  We then donned gloves and hauled carts full of plants and tools out to the planting site and got busy planting and pulling weeds.  I was impressed by the kids’ hard work!  Some of them planted up to ten plants in our short time there!  If I ever need to hire a yard clean up crew, I know who to call!

Student-led conferences:  Thanks for signing up for your conference.  It looks like we have gotten nearly everyone scheduled.  In order to allow time to visit with all families, we will need to keep our meetings to a maximum of 20 minutes.  If you arrive for your time and my door is still closed, please give me a quiet knock so that I know you are waiting.  (In fact, you might even give us a knock two minutes before your time so that we can have time to wrap things up.)  My job at these conferences is to let your student take the lead.  I will chime in with questions or comments if needed but will let the students run things for the most part.  Please feel free to ask me for more information/clarification if needed or make an appointment for another time to cover issues that you might want to discuss without your child present.

Ridgeline Math Club:  One of our great Ridgeline parents, Hayden Harker, will be leading this year’s math club.  The club is designed for grades 3-6 and is a place where students can practice their basic math facts, improve their understanding of area, arithmetic and fractions, and generally strengthen their foundations in math.  It should also appeal to students who have a good grasp of these concepts but just love math and talking math.  The first meeting is this Thursday, November 6th, from 3:15-4:15 in Jenny’s Space (next to the library). Parents and students are invited to attend and see what it’s all about.

Weekly work plans:  Since we had a short week this week and will have another short (shorter!) week next week, I am having kids keep their work plans and we will add next week's works to it and send it out all at once.  This gives the kids a little more time to finish things up over the long break if they chose to do so.  Look for the work plan and Friday folder next Friday.

Volunteering in Room 8:  Remember to check the google doc to look for ways you can support our classroom.  J
