Dana's Weekly Update 11-13-13

posted Nov 13, 2013, 10:20 AM by Cynthia Friedman

Dear Families,

It was fabulous to see all of you at conferences on Friday and Monday!  The kids did a great job sharing their work and their goals.  If you have additional concerns, questions or comments, please feel free to make an appointment with me for a follow-up conference.  Also, if you took home samples of your student’s work, testing data or have a TAG plan to review, please be sure to get those items back to school ASAP.

Science:  We continued talking and learning about our universe this week.  We took a walk on the Rexius chip trail to look at the relative scale of the solar system and the relative size of the planets.  It was very interesting to have the visual of the Earth as a peppercorn and to think of how many of those peppercorns would be able to fit within our volleyball “sun”!  We also reviewed the phases of the moon and represented each phase with oreo cookies to help us remember.

Calendars:  The rough drafts are just about done!!!  Your child should have all 12 months of research in rough draft form as well as 27 pages of math and 12 illustrations.  We have only those last four pages of math to complete and we will be ready for final drafts to be started.  Some students are already to that stage and are creating some awesome calendar pages!  I am learning a lot about a variety of fun topics!  It is great to have so many experts in our class!

Reading:  All students are currently reading and discussing a novel of their choice with a small reading group.  Students chose to read The Chocolate Touch, The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, The Mayflower Mystery, Maniac Magee, Sing Down the Moon and Holes.  Groups follow up the reading with discussion about the plot and characters as well as making connections with other books and their lives, talking about the author’s writing craft, identifying new vocabulary and other skills.  One of our groups is currently creating a final project to share what they learned, with each member taking on a different aspect of the project.

Barnes and Noble Book Fair:  Each year, students and families from Ridgeline gather at Barnes and Noble Bookstore for a night of literary fun.  This year the event will take place on Friday, November 15th.  In addition to getting together to share our love of books, each class will have a performance of some kind to share.  Our students have chosen to recite and act out some of our favorite poetry.  Students need to be there at 6:40 as our performance is scheduled for around 7:00.  Ask your child to share their plan.  I am looking forward to seeing their creative skits!

Upcoming Events:

·      11/8 School dance (5:30–7:00 for younger dancers & parents/8:00-10:00 for older kids & parents)
