Dana's Weekly Update 10-10-14

posted Oct 13, 2014, 10:20 AM by Cynthia Friedman

Greetings Families!

This has been a jam-packed short week!  Here’s the weekly news:

Salmon in the Classroom:  Our class is beginning a project in which we will raise salmon in our classroom!   We have gotten our tank set up and are ready for our egg delivery, which will happen next week.  Between now and Winter Break we will be caring for these salmon as they develop into fry.  Teams of students will be monitoring the pH, ammonia and temperature of the tanks three times a day.  We will watch them grow while we learn about anatomy, life cycles and keystone species.  We will tie these lessons to what we are learning about ecology and to our work with Waloma Restoration Project.  The project kicks off next week with a visit from a salmon and watershed expert, Kathy Morgan.  Stay tuned for info on an upcoming field trip related to our salmon in next week’s news.

Field trip to Alton Baker:  Our class will be heading out to the Whilumut Natural Area in Alton Baker park on November 4th from 11:30-2:00.  While there we will be learning more about the restoration of habitats after an event like the recent renovation of the Whilumut Passage bridge that affected the area near the park.  We will have a chance to learn about the biomes in that area and to be a part of the planting of native species that will eventually restore the site to its original state.  This will be another facet of our study on ecology and the role of humans in the environment.  We still have room for another chaperone.  Visit the volunteer sign up site if you are interested.

Read-in and Pajama Party:  On Friday, October 31st we will be having our first “Read-In” of the year.  For those of you new to our class, kids may come in pajamas and may bring a pillow/blanket/books/stuffed animal or any combination of these as long as all their items can fit in their backpack.  We will read most of the morning, taking a couple of breaks for some reading related activities and a snack break.  It is a very fun day that celebrates the joy of reading!  Please let me know if you would like to donate some healthy snacks for the event (dried fruit, popcorn, fruit, cheese sticks, etc.).  Parents are welcome as always! J

Ridgeline Block Party this weekend:  Don’t miss Saturday’s fun event!  To kick off the day, Mood Area 52 will play Russian tango music. A silent auction will include an enormous amount of items donated from local businesses as well as the themed donation baskets from our classrooms.  During the silent auction the EugeneBhangra dance group will be dancing, and The Ridgeline Ukulele Extravaganza (T.R.U.E.) will be playing. Our event will close with a lively performance by Eugene’s own Sugar Beets!  Come have some fun and support Ridgeline!

Room 8’s Video Diary:  Four students in our classroom have proposed an exciting project for our classroom!  Emma, Niko, Allisyn and Shaylee are going to be chronicling the year in our classroom.  They are planning to use a combination of still photos, interviews and videos to record some of the events and projects in room 8 this year.  In addition, they will be asking students to talk about Montessori in general and to give some advice to future upper elementary students.  They are also planning on including some short interviews with both lower el and middle students to help round out the view of our school.  These students will be learning lots of important skills related to writing, public speaking, research and video editing…as well as having fun!  At the end of the project they would like to make multiple copies of the video and to sell it to other families in our room.  They will donate any proceeds to the Direct Donation Drive to support Ridgeline specialists like our music, PE and counseling staff.  What an awesome idea!  Please sign the permission form created by these students in your child’s Friday Folder this week.  Let me know if you have questions or if you have any special expertise to donate to this project.
