Dear Families,

Calendar Open House: Tuesday Jan 20th drop in from 5:00-6:00 to admire and celebrate our students’ amazing calendar creations! Enjoy some student made snacks and take a look at 29 different research calendars, each filled with 12 expository essays, 12 pieces of original artwork and 365 student-created math problems! Please join us to congratulate our students on a job well done!

Tree Planting Field Trip: This year, in addition to learning about plant life cycles, parts, and their role in the ecosystem, we have had several opportunities to go out into our community and provide restoration service for environments that have been impacted by human activity. In keeping with this work, we are planning to travel to Buford Park on Thursday, February 12th to do some tree planting. We will be hiking about a mile to the site before getting some instruction and tool to begin planting. We will need parent drivers/chaperones for this trip, so please be sure that your information is updated at the office prior to the trip if you would like to attend. (This must be done yearly, so be sure to talk with Kayla if you haven’t driven on a field trip THIS school year.) Watch for a permission slip coming home soon.

Group Novels: Students have been working hard this year in our reading anthologies, discussing and practicing concepts related to key ideas and details, writer’s craft and structure, identifying themes, and comparing and contrasting literature from a variety of genres, perspectives and cultures. We are now going to continue to expand on this knowledge through group novels. Students began groups this week in one of the following novels: Inkheart, Powerless, Origami Yoda, or Landry News. Ask your child to tell you about the book they are reading and about the work they have done with it so far.

Human Growth and Development- Our yearly Human Growth and Development course will be held this spring. During this course, students will learn about and discuss age-appropriate information about the male and female reproductive systems, changes that occur during puberty and HIV/AIDS. A parent preview night will be held on ______ from _____. Parents are invited to attend to meet our presenter, ______, from Planned Parenthood of Eudene and to preview the curriculum that will be presented to students. Please let me know by _______ if you plan to attend the information session. We need to have a minimum of five parent RSVP in order to hold the preview. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
