Dana's Weekly Update 1-23-15

Dear Families,

Calendar Open House:  It was nice to see you all at the Showcase on Tuesday.  Thanks to everyone for coming and for leaving feedback for the kids on their research calendars.  They all eagerly rushed in to read their comment sheets on Wednesday morning and they were wearing those big, goofy grins that we all get when we are feeling really proud of something.  It was awesome!  There was also much follow-up discussion about what they are going to chose for next year’s calendar.  (Even a few teary eyes from a couple of sixth graders who knew that this was their last year! J)

Tree Planting Field Trip:  Be sure to return the field trip permission slip for our upcoming trip to Buford Park.  It was sent home in your child’s Friday folder last week.  If you have misplaced it, it is attached electronically below.  We still need drivers/chaperones in order to make this trip happen!  Thanks to Sandi T., Dave, and Cat who have confirmed that they can drive on this trip.  We still need 20 additional seats!  Remember, to drive you MUST turn in your updated forms to the office before the field trip on February 12th.

New Music Teacher: We have a new music teacher at Ridgeline!  Stephanie has visited our class twice and the kids are really having a good time with her and learning a lot.  During our first session she worked with the kids on an African song and accompanying dance.  They were challenged but did a fantastic and enthusiastic job!  This week the kids worked on learning to recognize hand signals for the notes of the scale and some of the basics of reading music.  We are excited to have Stephanie and I’m proud of our kids for being flexible as we get our music program up and running.

After School Programs At Ridgeline:  Several organizations are now offering after school programs at Ridgeline! If you are interested in after school activities for your student(s) see details near the bottom of the eNews in a new section called “After School Programs At Ridgeline.” Current programs include: Imagination Yoga, YoungRembrandts, and TGA Tennis & Golf.

Romeo and Juliet:  Toward the end of February we will begin looking at the script for our class play for this year: Romeo and Juliet.  I hope many of you had a chance to see the amazing performance the students put on last year of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.   They truly astounded me with their performance!  Just as last year, our class will be in charge of all the aspects of the play: costumes, lighting, sound, scenery, advertising, research into the history of the time period, education about the plotline, presentations to other classes, and of course, the performance itself!   This is a VERY big endeavor and we need YOUR help!  Please take a look at your schedule and see if you might be able to contribute your time and/or talents to our production.  We will need parents to help head up and volunteer for each of the aspects listed above.  Some of these will involve working with small groups of students (like painting scenery, running lines, helping with blocking the scenes…) while others can be done from home.  Our biggest need is for a super dedicated volunteer (or perhaps a partnership) to help pull out groups of students by scene to “block” the play.  This volunteer will work with students on where to stand on stage, how to move their bodies to help communicate what is going on, and give practice with lines.  This position would begin in April and would require a couple of hours each week until the performance at the beginning of June.  Please contact me if you are interested or if you are “maybe” interested (we could share this position if needed, and I can advise as well).  Also drop me a line if you would like to help with one of our other tasks.  Thanks for helping to support our class on this fun and exciting project! J

Human Growth and Development- Our yearly Human Growth and Development course will be held February 3-5th from 10:00-11:15.  During this course, students will learn about and discuss age-appropriate information about the male and female reproductive systems and changes that occur during puberty.  A parent preview night will be held on Jan 28th at 5:00.  Parents are invited to attend to meet our presenter, Joanne, from Planned Parenthood of Eugene and to preview the curriculum that will be presented to students.   Please let me know by Jan 26th if you plan to attend the information session.  We need to have a minimum of five parents RSVP in order to hold the preview.  I have two parents who have already let me know they would like to attend.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
