Dear Families,

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a restful and fun-filled time with your children during the holiday break! It sounds like the kids all had a great time and they seem excited to be back here and to be getting back into the swing of things.

Field Trip Volunteers Needed: On Thursday, Jan 24th, from 9:15-11:15, our class will take a trip to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art on the U of O campus. We will enjoy the art and, using a technique called “Visual Thinking Strategies” (VTS), we will talk about what we see and share our observations as a group. (Thanks to Ben Brinkley, who stopped by our school this week to talk with us about VTS!) We have openings for four volunteers to join us. Please let me know if you would like to join us on this great trip! We will be riding a bus to the museum, so no private transportation will be needed for this field trip.

Creative Expressions: Our new Creative Expressions class is beginning next week. This session’s offerings include: Spirit Club, Story Theater, Adventures in Cooking, Color Expressions (painting), Tai Chi, Drawing Basics, Fantasy Writing, Knitting, Papier Mache, Fun Fitness, Spanish Language & Culture and Singing Class. It will be another exciting session!

We are always looking for new ideas for upcoming sessions. Please let me know if you have a skill or love that you would like to share. We would enjoy adding sessions of dance, music, art, computer programming or other ideas that would help provide the students with an opportunity to express their creative sides and explore their interests. Please contact me if you have some ideas, resources or leads for us to follow up on! Thanks to Rachael Carnes and Christy Zollinger for leading groups this session!

Social Studies: As you know, we have been learning about Oregon geography the last couple of weeks. We have been gaining a lot of knowledge in preparation for creating our salt dough Oregon maps. These 3-D maps will include mountain ranges, valleys, rivers, lakes, cities and other features of Oregon. It should be lots of fun!

Also this week in Social Studies we have been looking more broadly at the world. We read Ben’s Dream, by Chris VanAllsburg (our current author study) and used the well-known landmarks as a jumping off place to learn more about the geography, traditions and culture of other countries. We have groups researching the Taj Mahal, Mt. Rushmore, the Parthenon, the Eiffel Tower, the Sphinx, the Great Wall of China, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Basilica of St. Basil and others!

Supplies needed: cups and napkins for Literary Tea, salt (10 lbs) and flour (12 lbs) for our Oregon maps

Upcoming Events:
Wed Jan 16th: 6pm - 7pm TAG Parent Group Meeting (library)
Thu Jan 17th: 6pm - 7:30pm Site Council Meeting

Thanks, families, for the great work you are doing every day with your kids! It really shows in the classroom!
