Emily's Weekly Update 9-25-15

We’re Goal Oriented!

This year, Fridays are reserved for Goal Conferences.  All students clean their cubbies and take home finished work.  Second and third graders meet with me to see if work goals are being met.  These weekly goals might include follow up on writing lessons (like “make a list to develop ideas”), Xtra math practice goals, or project goals (like finishing the final draft of a report).  Some children have asked to take unfinished work home to do over the weekend.  Check in with your second or third grade child on Fridays and ask how their Goal Conference went!

Field Trip Permission Slips Sent Home

We are traveling to Mt. Pisgah on October 5 and to Dorris Ranch on November 5.  Do a quick backpack check; we’ve sent home a packet with the school handbook, several forms and an orange permission slip to be returned.  Thanks to our volunteers, we now are all set for chaperones for both trips.

Learning Chinese

Our class is hosting Wenyi, a Chinese intern, in cooperation with a UO exchange program.  Wenyi is learning all about American education and teaching us about Chinese culture in the process.  We have a daily lesson on the directions (up, down, left, right, front, back, and middle) and will add to our vocabulary throughout the first semester.  Wenyi will also begin teaching small group language lessons soon.

Homework Starts Next Friday

Our project-based homework is on the way, and will be due on Thursday, October 29.  You are welcome to join us for our Homework Gallery, when students display and present their work to each other and to members of our community.  Our first Homework Gallery will be October 29th at 9:00 am.

Extra Homework Available

Do you want another way to support your child and stay up to date on their progress?  Ridgeline parent Ken Lancaster has volunteered to coordinate an additional, optional homework program for families who’d like a weekly packet of math and language practice.  Please let me know if you’re interested in receiving this, and we’ll arrange for packets to go home with your child.  This program will start October 5.
