Emily's Weekly Update 2-19-16

Simple Machine of the Day – We are studying the simple machines that help us do work more easily.  We’ve done hands-on experiments with ramps and levers and searched out ramps around the school.  Every morning, we look at a new example of a wedge, inclined plane, wheel, pulley, screw or lever.  Your child can bring in an example of a simple machine to write about or share.

Wood for Hand Drilling - We will learn about screws by using a hand drill. We are looking for a donation of 2 x 4 wood, about 2 to 4 feet long.  The softer the wood, the better - even with a simple machine, this is hard work!

Middle Ages – Our next focus in history will be the Middle Ages.  We will be sure to build some medieval simple machines, but we’ll also be learning about the feudal system and what life was like for everyone from serfs to royals.  Feel free to send in books or artifacts that will support our studies.

Pasta Dinner – I hope to see you Friday evening at Ridgeline’s annual Pasta Dinner! The dinner menu will include penne pasta with marinara sauce and pesto, salad, and bread. Also featured this year is a student marketplace, classroom painted pasta bowls for auction, centerpiece paper flowers made by our class, and a performance by Ridgeline’s middle school ukulele group, T.R.U.E.! We are asking for a suggested donation of $5 per person or $20 per family. The Pasta Dinner is an RCO fundraiser supporting the general fund fundraising goal of $40,000 for this school year.
