Emily's Weekly Update 1-14-14

We are continuing our year-long study of the plant kingdom by looking closely at mosses this week. Luckily, we live in a wonderland of non-vascular plants here in Eugene. Please feel free to send in any interesting mosses that you find, and we will add them to our class collection. Extra credit for sending in a liverwort!

Second Grade TAG Testing
On Wednesday morning, all second graders will take a TAG (talented and gifted) screening test. This is part of a program for second graders throughout the 4J district. The results of the test are just one factor that is taken into account for TAG designation. It’s a fun test of spatial reasoning and most kids enjoy the experience. Kids may have questions about TAG before or after the test. I reassure children that every person has different talents and that not every talent can be measured by a test.

Chinese Art
We had a great time at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art last week. The kids made a real connection between the calligraphy and brush painting exhibits and the projects that we’ve done in the classroom. We are now preparing for our big blowout Chinese New Year celebration on January 22. Students have made traditional red banners and will make Chinese lanterns this week.
