New State Testing Meeting Thursday, March 19
All parents, and especially parents of third graders, should plan to attend Ridgeline’s State Testing Meeting at 6:30 on March 19.

Along with the Common Core learning standards, standardized testing is undergoing a fundamental change.  These standards and assessments form a road map for your child’s education now and in the years to come.  This learning landscape looks very different from what you may be used to.  We want to help you understand and prepare for these changes.

At the meeting, Sharon will give a brief review of the Smarter Balanced Assessments (the new standardized tests).  Then Eric, Cheri and I will show you examples of the third grade test, and you’ll learn how to help your child become familiar with the new format.

If you only come to one meeting this year, make this be the one!
Science Fair Ideas Due on Thursday
This Thursday we will get another visit from our UO scientist helpers.  They will talk us through some of the next steps in planning our projects and, time permitting, take a look at some of the kids’ research questions.  Make sure to return homework on Thursday to take advantage of this opportunity.
Help Us Make Pi
Last week we made fabric number flags in honor of Pi Day, 3/14/15.  Each student contributed a digit or two using beautiful fabrics donated by Sheryl Leblanc.  Along with Dana’s class, we will put our flags in order and display them on a long banner during the third week of March.

We are looking for a volunteer to help us sew our fabric flags to a clothesline for display.  Don’t worry, unlike the real number pi, our number banner will come to an end.  Let me know if you can help!
Letter Writing
The children learned how to write and address letters last week.  Already, many students have sent off letters and are awaiting replies to their home address.  If your child receives a letter in response to their correspondence, please send it in to share.  Finally, thank you to everyone who donated stamps for our letter writing campaign.
Coming Up…
Over the next few weeks we will start our study of amphibians, learn about the Incas and their mountain home, and learn to compare and contrast subjects in our writing.  Feel free to send in resources (or amphibians) that support this work!
