Beginning with a Bang
The school year is off to a running start! We've spent the first few days getting to know each other and getting oriented in our beautiful new classroom and school. There have been lots of games, interviews, and scavenger hunts as we build our little classroom community.
We are also thinking about bigger beginnings - how did the universe come into being? We look at some of the many ways cultures have answered this question over the years. We've already explored an ancient Greek creation story, the myth of Pandora's box. Speaking of which, a classroom is kind of like a box... we can fill it with the qualities that we value. The kids generated a great list of the things they want in their classroom. Here's a sample: caring, fun, big ideas, cooperation, love, self respect, exercise, fairness, family... and the list goes on.
Next up in our creation stories is the story of the big bang. It will launch our studies of the states of matter, the elements, and the history of life on earth. I'll be presenting this story and talking about its place in the Montessori curriculum at the next RCO meeting, September 25 at 6:00.
This week, we'll be starting PE (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and music (Wednesdays).
Alyson and I would like to invite you to our class meeting this Thursday at 6 pm. You'll learn about your child's daily and weekly schedule, the ins and outs of Montessori work time, volunteer opportunities and our upcoming homework program. Sorry, no child care will be provided.
Don't forget to send your child's water bottle back to school! Kids also need a cloth napkin or place mat, a snack, and whatever utensils they'll need (we don't have silverware to loan).
