Clint's Weekly Update 9-25-14

Greetings from Room 10!

3 Islands

This week’s work with the 3 Island Project has been full of intrigue, surprise, and a touch of disappointment.  With the mini-characters complete, students formed small groups, with each electing a representative.  These representatives, in turn, selected a governor, who has direct access to documents released by NEMSC (the National Economic Mercantilism and Supervisory Company).  This is when the class learned that there were previous attempts to move to the islands that all failed.  Regardless, our classroom’s characters wanted to give it a try but were met with delay after delay.  Hopefully, they will finally be on their way by the end of the weekend.

Walama Restoration Project

On Tuesday, we had our first guest lesson by Nicole Smedegaard with Walama Restoration Project.  The Walama Restoration Project (WRP) is a community organized non-profit, dedicated to environmental stewardship and biological diversity through education and habitat restoration.  Currently we are scheduled to develop our partnership with WRP on November 5, with a field trip to Alton Baker Park.  If you are interested in chaperoning for this fieldtrip, please be sure to visit the Google Document at: https://docs.google.com/a/ridgeline.org/spreadsheets/d/1GXbOAC_MVpPVzh1FhKmR1PibvqcmR4qAZ2EEyeIYMSs/edit#gid=0.  All of the pink highlighted projects still need volunteers to complete.

Classroom Basket Contributions (see the attached flyer)

Think ANIMALS!  We already have a 1,000 piece puzzle donated, a stuffed animal, and a “Sounds of the Jungle” talking book.  Other contributions might include one of Eric Carle's books, animal print fabric, hand sewn faux animal ears or tails, handmade cards with animal paw prints, or any number of items.  The basket will be part of the Silent Auction & Block Party on October 11th at Southtowne Shoppes!  Mark your calendars!

Xtra Math Online App

This year we are using a web-based program called XtraMath to increase speed and accuracy in arithmetic. Your child will be asked to spend a few minutes each day practicing math on a computer here in Room 10.  If you are interested in tracking your son or daughter's progress, please email me and I will send their special access code and instructions.

Vision Screening

Please remind your students to wear or bring their glasses to the October 3rd Vision Screening.
