The UofO SPICE instructors returned this week to work with research teams in writing hypotheses. The instructors said that the way they are interacting with our class is unique. Usually they present lessons to the whole classes about various steps of the scientific process. With our class, they are instead working with small groups on specific research questions. The instructors said that they feel this format is allowing for more quality time with students, and it is really helping students fine tune the actual questions they are interested in answering.
After SPICE left, students were asked to update their Science Fair Google Document with their group’s working hypothesis. If you are interested in seeing which science fair steps your child has completed, please visit this Google Document: https://docs.google.com/a/ridgeline.org/spreadsheets/d/17RVx3ZNhOpjkbN_6X-GwQvigdj7vW7_fuTW5w9-Svjo/edit#gid=0. If you look at this document, you will notice that many students have not been checked off for their research yet. The research phase is proving to take a little more time than predicted. Please share any sources, including experts, with your child so they are better able to complete this very important step in the scientific process.
As part of our U.S. History unit on the time period from European Exploration to the American Revolution, many students connected Joy Hakim’s Chapter 38 on the Triangle Trade to the Purple Dudes during the 3 Islands Project. Students were then asked to create an outline for a fictional slave narrative that is based on the experiences that one of the 3 Islands’ Purple Dudes might have had. Next week, the outline will be used to create a rough draft slave narrative.
