Clint's Weekly Update 10-5-15

posted Oct 8, 2015, 12:57 PM by Cynthia Friedman

Dear Families,

New math strands were introduced this week, meaning each student is now responsible for research associated with two different math strands that are aligned to the common core standards.  In addition, advanced math lesson will be offered to students that are showing the ability to balance their existing workload.  This week’s impromptu advanced lesson was on triangular numbers.

NUGYRO Project

A number of parents have contributed to preparing for the next phase of the NUGYRO Project by cutting, painting, or donating materials.  To complete the collection of materials needed, we only need a large canvas or tarp like material that measures as close to 12' x 15' as possible.  One idea is to use white or off-white sheets (which I can get free from MECCA) and sew them together.  If you are interested in helping with this, please email me at clint.moore@ridgeline.org

The first of the student created wall friezes, representing the seven planets of the NUGYRO Planetary System, have been completed!  The depiction of Planet III shows a gorgeous mountain scene, with lush valleys, and a meandering river.  It does appear like a suitable place for human habitation.

Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences

Sign-up sheets are posted outside Ridgeline’s main office. For those parents that do not have regularly scheduled meetings already set up with me, please choose a conference time that will allow for you and your child to attend the conference.

TypingClub

Students that already turned in their Internet User Agreement form were given an introduction to Typing Club this week.  Typing Club is an online touch typing app that, if used properly, can help your child learn to touch type using the QWERTY keyboard.  My key to successfully helping Upper El students learn to touch type is to place a piece of paper blocking their view of their hands while they are learning.  This helps avoid the “hunting and pecking” pitfall that some students try to use.

To login, my students will need to go to our class’ specialized URL: https://clintmoore.typingclub.com.  Many students have trouble logging in on their first attempt because they simply go to typingclub.com.

Like XtraMath, TypingClub is an at home activity unless a parent has requested it be done at school because of home computer/Internet limitations.  Unlike XtraMath, TypingClub is best done on a laptop or desktop with a keyboard.  In the past, some students have told me that practicing touch typing on a tablet can be frustrating.

TypingClub is a service that I subscribe to, costing roughly $3.00 per student for a year-long account.  If you are able to send in $3.00 towards setting up your child’s account, it would help a lot.  As of today, I have collected $12.00 to go towards the $81 dollar subscription fee.

Parent Support Group at Ridgeline

Have you ever noticed that managing your kids can sometimes be stressful?  Do you find yourself repeating directions and wondering if your kids are listening?  Do you find yourself in power struggles from time to time?   Join the club!  Starting October 19, Ridgeline Montessori will be hosting a 7 week series of Parent Support meetings geared toward enhancing parent tools for helping kids cooperate quickly and easily.  Childcare will be provided!  The group will be facilitated by Oregon Community Programs.  Please come and share your insights, experience, and questions.  Additional information can be found in this week's handouts or contact Cynthia Friedman (cynthia.friedman@ridgeline.org).
