BOTANY STUDIESWhat is the ancient ancestor of maize (corn)?  We watched a fascinating video that explained why scientists were never able to find the wild relative of corn and thought it was extinct! Recently fossils of the ancestor of corn—teosinte, were finally discovered. The fossils were found in an ancient cave dwelling in southern Mexico and were nearly 9000 years old! Ask your student to explain or watch this YouTube video together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBuYUb_mFXA   Enjoy!

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip: Our pumpkin Patch Field trip to Detering’s Orchards is planned for Tuesday, October 24th. Please complete the attached permission form and return as soon as possible. Let us know if you would like to join us as an adult supervisor.

Curriculum Sharing: Please come with your student and enjoy Curriculum Sharing on Wednesday, October 18. This is a time when your child can bring you into the classroom and show you some favorite work. It’s also a special opportunity to enjoy your child’s independence and love of learning. We have two times available on Wednesday to accommodate families’ schedules. Come anytime between 3:05-4:05 or 6:00-7:00pm. Questions? Call 681-9662 or e-mail cheri.spies@ridgeline.org

DRESS UP FOR INTERNATIONAL DAY: On Friday, Oct. 27, students in Cheri’s Class are invited to celebrate International Day by dressing in clothing or bringing something from another country. The items can be anything from a ‘French beret’ or ‘Mexican sombrero’ to something more elaborate. As well as making flags and maps, each child will have an opportunity to research and share information about their country. Afterwards we’ll snack on some international foods. The snacks need to be commercially prepared and/or packaged or prepared at school. If you would like to help with snack donations or classroom set up, please let me know. Questions? Email or send a note.

Family Conferences are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, October 30-31. Watch for sign up information in my next update.

Bhangra Dance: Thanks to Ridgeline parent and professional dance instructor, SatPavan Kaur Khalsa, our students enjoy Bhangra Dance class every Thursday morning! Students interested in signing up for private group lessons, contact SatPavan at satpavankaur@gmail.com.
