This week…
This was our first ‘real’ week of school, in that students were being held ever more accountable for the amount of work finished and how time was spent. This is something that must be crept up on, because the youngest students aren’t quite ready for the rigors of the increased expectations and we don’t want to scare them away by dumping it on them all at once. It is a process…sometimes a long one. You may have noticed some spelling or DML (Daily Math and Language) packets coming home. These are due by Friday morning in order to participate in our extra gym class on Friday. If the work is not turned in by Friday morning then the student will be working while the rest of the eligible students are in gym. ALL students still get recess on Friday, so the extra gym time is an effort to build some independence and academic drive in each student. History shows it is compelling for the student.

This week we talked about the planets and their relative sizes and distances, as well as the Bohr Diagram. The Bohr Diagram was the more difficult lesson, but it will stay available to students who wish to pursue this mystery further. We also had our 2nd Great Lesson: The Coming of Life. This introduces the students to the long period of life building over the course our planets existence according to the scientist’s story. We start with cyano-bacteria and end with humans (because we are the pinnacle of life apparently). I picture my awesome dog looking at me right now and saying, “Really, Eric?”

Next week and beyond…
In the coming days we will be learning about the importance of the early oceans in the development of our atmosphere, cardinal directions, and lots of maps. We will also look at the Clock of Eras, which places all the eras of the earth on a clock face to better understand the passing of time. October begins the month of Forgiveness in our Peaceful Character Education.

Hope you have a great weekend.
