Eric's Weekly Update 9-20-12

posted Sep 20, 2012, 12:26 PM by Cynthia Friedman
This week… We started our discussion of the solar system and will revisit it often. The Second Great Lesson is The Coming of Life. It’s such an easy thing to say, and yet according to the scientists’ story it took billions of years to get from no life (Hadean Era) to single celled organisms (Archeozoic Era), and then to complicated multi-celled organisms like those we have today (Neozoic Era). Life has been working very hard while we weren’t paying attention. Speaking of working hard, interested students have been building atoms using the Bohr Diagram, but so far no spontaneous life has been seen. That’s probably a good thing. Picture Day went off without a hitch Just  say “Cheese!”
Next week and beyond…

Next week we begin our studies of land and water features by discussing the use of maps and looking for specific features on them: how to make something round appear flat, ancient and modern maps, the Clock of Eras (using the face of a clock to show passage of millennia), the Science Factory trip, Rick Kang visit, and catch-up lessons. Because life happens, I have worked in a day here and there to get in those lessons that I simply run out of time to do as scheduled.

Our trip to the Science Factory will begin early on the 27th. This visit will take most of the school day. We have arranged a visit to the main exhibit hall for an hour before going into the planetarium to see two short presentations on the solar system and astronauts. We will be eating lunch at the Science Factory, so please plan lunches accordingly. There is a $5.00 entrance fee per student and permission slips come home Friday. Please remember to return your permission slips with the entrance fee ($5.00) ASAP. It prevents the teachers from getting stressed out!
