As you now know the class has chosen Northeast Native American tribes to research. Each student has received a sheet to help them in the research process. Knowing that sometimes papers inexplicably get lost between the school hallway and your car, I have included an attachment of the research sheet with this email. This sheet is not meant to be exhaustive. Some questions on the sheet cannot be discovered, and other exciting information may come up during study. If the information sounds interesting to your student, it will be interesting to the class as well.
I will be encouraging students to put their information on 3x5 cards so their presentation will be easier for them. Posters and the like make for a nice visual reminder of the things they are hearing from the speaker. Posters will be displayed around the room following the presentations which allows students to continue their learning. I encourage the students to try and be done with the research portion of their tribe so that the week leading up to the presentation can be spent practicing their speech and working on pronouncing hard words.
In addition to the tribe work we discussed the biomes of the earth in more detail, looked closer at the impact of Europeans on the New World (circa 1492), rediscovered the Laws of Motion with Isaac Newton, and continued our discussions on the importance of forgiveness.
Next week and beyond…
In the coming week we will look at life in early America (including some children’s games and songs), learn about the confederacy of the Iroquois, take a closer look at the elements of biomes, and revisit the Sun and planets (experiments). There will be no school on Friday or the following Monday to allow for conferences. These are student led conferences, so please bring your student along if you have signed up to meet with me.
Finally, in the coming week we will be practicing our presentation/play that we will do at the Barnes and Noble Book Fair. The Fair is on Friday the 13th, and it will be a good-luck day for us because we have a great show to put on for everybodyJ
Hope you have a grand weekend.
