I would like to thank our parent-readers and those who came in to perform assessments with the students. This is very time consuming to do alone, and I am grateful for the help that was offered so generously.
This week we made a collage as part of our 5 Kingdoms work (Fungi-Plant-Animal only), and did some measuring using centimeters and millimeters. We also learned a lot about King Arthur…or was it Arth-ursis? Seriously, folks. That was one of the guesses! The people who study this stuff are pretty sure there is a very loose basis for the myth, but are still unsure of the details like his real name and where his castle was and silly trivia like that. We are also working on descriptive writing. This is a long process and we will be doing this and more “forever,” or so the kids say :-)
Next week we will have an overview of Asia and then begin our studies by learning about ancient Mesopotamia, and the first wheels and calendars. We will also look at some of the inventions that came out of Asia.
Reminder: On the 31st of January we will celebrate Chinese New Year (Year of the Horse). This is a favorite of mine and we make a big deal out of it. We will have food, crafts, games, art, music and more. As the day approaches, you may want to consider donating some special treats for the occasion. Wonderful examples can be found at Sunrise Asian Market. Foods such as crackers, fortune cookies, nori, and much more are happily accepted and make for a lot of memories. If you would like it, so will the kids. At some point we will watch Disney’s Mulan. Maybe not historically accurate, but entertaining and a vehicle for more discussion.
