This week…

Over the past weeks we have looked at the systems that operate within the earth or around the earth.  It is surprising how integral these systems are to each other and to life in general.  It’s actually quite amazing that any of us are here.  Speaking of systems, the class meeting is a system we use to regulate the affairs of our class.  Students submit ideas, talk about concerns, and sometimes offer solutions.  One of the things to come out of the class meeting was a desire for more work time.  I carved out a way to add an extra half hour or so. Students who use their time less carefully welcome this, but students who work efficiently have more time on their hands.  We can’t have that! Therefore, with added time comes added work.  It’s been received well, surprisingly.  I think it’s a good balance for most students, and everybody is learning more.

Next week and beyond…

Presentations are next week.  I have emailed the schedule to you already. Please have your student practice their report with you so that they feel ready to stand before their peers.  In the coming days we will learn about earthquakes (as part of our studies about the lithosphere), more on greenhouse effects, and formation of mountains through the folding of the earth’s crust.  We like to shake things up.  Get it?  Shake it up?  Anyone???????
